Worlds Collide: NXT vs. NXT Alumni

April 14, 2019 – Brooklyn, New York

Kassius Ohno def. Aiden English
This had a real house show vibe to is, as Ohno played more toward Percy Watson & Byron Saxton on commentary (making fun of English for also being a commentator). Speaking of commentators, Watson & Saxton seem to be a couple months behind on the NXT TV, as they talk about Ohno as if he’s still in a feud with Matt Riddle and don’t mention that he’s now on NXT UK. All of that was more interesting than this match, which was a chunk of nothing and a big tope from English. *½

Harper def. Dominik Dijakovic
Harper is very popular with this crowd, thanks in no small part to a very touching essay he wrote on social media about this return match in a small venue meaning a great deal to him. He responds by smiling wide, and it’s adorable. Much like Dijakovic’s match against Keith Lee, it was fun here to watch these big fellas toss each other around and fly out of the ring. If we’re not going to get a Dijakovic vs. Lee rematch for a while, this was plenty good as a replacement (and better than the Lee match thanks to the crowd’s love of Harper). ***½

Bobby Fish & Kyle O’Reilly def. Alexander Wolfe & Killian Dain
Dain is way more slim than the last time I saw him. Sadly, that left less of an impression on me than did the fact that I now kind of understand why SAnitY isn’t used on TV much anymore. Wolfe is just so boring. Things picked up a bit down the stretch, but the first two-thirds of this match was a chore to watch. Not a sure surprise, as SAnitY was the first group to give Pete Dunne a sub-par match in NXT. Fish & O’Reilly keep attacking Dain after the match, so Eric Young runs in and beats them up. **¼

Tyler Breeze def. Roderick Strong
Strong is in maximum Roddy-mode and I am here for it. The crowd was quiet through his control segment, which was surprising to me because I’d have assumed that fans who go to Axxess are really diehard. Still, they didn’t get any Tyler chants going or even really cheer for him until he was already into his comeback. The match was technically quite good, with Strong playing a great bully and Breeze firing up at just the right times; I’m just bummed it didn’t happen in front of more engaged fans. ***

I love that there’s more NXT universe content. Harper vs. Dijakovic was dope, the main event was solid, and I’ll even cut Saxton & Watson a break as a commentary team because they were totally neutral and ignorable after the opening match.
