EVOLVE 126

April 13, 2019 – Ybor City, Florida

The show, which has got to be the most NXT-filled EVOLVE show ever, starts with a tag team match wherein the team of Milk Chocolate defeats Task Force. The evil Task Force attack Milk Chocolate after the match, but WWE Performance Center stalwart Babatunde comes out and beats up the bad guys.

Brandi Lauren def. Lacey Lane
Lane clearly likes wrestling a lot, because she does a ton of stuff that she’s seen other people do. Unfortunately, she doesn’t emulate it well. Lauren is also not good. Those are the elements for a pretty bad (but reasonably short) match. ¾*

Kona Reeves def. Colby Corino
Speaking of bad, you’ve got both of these guys. Corino even botches grabbing the microphone from Reeves. Corino does a temporary babyface turn for this match so the crowd has something to hold onto. That was a good move, as this wound up being the best match I’ve seen out of either guy. Reeves bullied the much smaller Corino, though Corino was able to take control by taking advantage of any and all opening Reeves gave him. Corino even waited for an appropriate moment in the match to hit the Meteora and didn’t just hit it out of nowhere in the beginning. Reeves kicked out of that, demoralizing Corino, and then pretty much rolled him from there. I almost hate to give Reeves credit, but if he can have matches like this in NXT then I’ll stop ragging on him. ***

Adrian Jaoude nc. Anthony Henry
Jaoude’s run in EVOLVE is starting to look like a WWE video game. He got dominated a few jobbers, had a bit of a longer match with Harlem Bravado that didn’t really make him sweat, then finally got put into a match with someone viable neither guy could put the other one away. In this case it was because Henry poked Jaoude in the eye, that turned what had been a really good technical contest into a brawl, and the when they stopped responding to the referee he called the match off. The pull-apart brawl after the match was well done. I really liked everything that happened here and genuinely want to see a rematch with a finish. ***¼

Shane Thorne def. Curt Stallion
Stallion looks like what would happen if Stevie Richards got trapped in a cave for a week. Thorne is a better athlete than Reeves, but less of a dick, so when these guys pretty much told the same story as Reeves and Corino this one had different strengths and weaknesses. I was less invested in Stallion overcoming Thorne, but the match was more exciting. Even the finish was really similar, with Thorne eventually deciding he was done playing around and putting Stallion down with a short series of moves. This show is on a role. ***

Angelo Dawkins def. Eddie Kingston {Falls Count Anywhere Match}
The beginning of this match interrupted an Eric Bugenhagen air guitar solo, so that’s points off right from the word go. Because of that, Bugenhagen got involved and helped his bud Dawkins win the match with a spear on the floor. This was pretty short and to be honest I was zoned out during most of it because nothing really happened. *½

Austin Theory def. Raul Mendoza {EVOLVE Championship Match}
While the action moved consistently here, there were so many telegraphed moments that it really took me out of the match. I like Mendoza, but this wasn’t his breakout performance. Maybe Theory’s next open challenge against an NXT wrestler will be more interesting. After the match, Theory says he wants to fight Adam Cole in a non-title match, since he’s already beaten Roderick Strong and Kyle O’Reilly and he doesn’t think Bobby Fish is worth a fight. The non-title stip kind of telegraphs of the winner of that one will be. **¾

I wonder if every show in Florida will feature this much of an NXT presence since the Performance Center is like a 90-minute drive from this venue.
