NXT UK 39

April 17, 2019 – Brooklyn, New York

A very odd thing happened during the taping of this episode… nobody reported what happened online. So for the first time pretty much since this show debuted I have no idea what’s going to happen.

Joe Coffey & Mark Coffey def. Raul Mendoza & Humberto Carrillo
Unsurprisingly, the Axxess crowd in Brooklyn is as silent as the crowd in Pheonix was for the NXT UK tapings there. I watched this match with the sound turned down as a result, and it was a fun little speed vs. power match. Mendoza & Carillo impressed more than the Coffeys, but I’m not mad at that from an entertainment standpoint. **¾

Kassius Ohno cuts a promo, misusing the broken clock metaphor and basically calls himself a loser. Whoops. He’s targeting Ligero, for the same reason that Eddie Dennis, Joseph Conners, and Jordan Devlin did before him (Ligero gets lauded for being fun to watch). What a snooze.

The whole locker room was impressed with Pete Dunne vs. WALTER at Takeover. Many of them want to see a rematch. The European Union don’t have an opinion though, and Devlin doesn’t care either. Then WALTER stares down Devlin. Crap, they’re hotshotting the Devlin/WALTER match. That could be great if they built it up a bit.

Dave Mastiff def. Kona Reeves
Reeves tainting this brand with his terribleness is terrible and it makes me feel terrible. As expected, Reeves was a bore when he was in control (why was he given a stretch to be in control?) and his selling was crap. Mastiff did his best with what he was given. In the back after the match, Wolfgang takes offense to Mastiff being called a strongman. *½

Flash Mandrews is stoked to wrestle Mustache Mountain. I guess that’s happening next week. Also happening next week will be Ohno vs. Ligero. Also also, Jinny has nothing to say about her title match loss last week.

Rhea Ripley def. Kacy Catanzaro
The crowd finally wakes up for Catanzaro. Sadly for the crowd, she got squished by Ripley here. It was a fun, short match, but the emphasis has to be on short. Ripley keeps attacking Catanzaro after the match and nobody makes the save. In the back, Piper Niven defends Catanzaro from Ripley’s continued verbal abuse. N/A

Amir Jordan & Kenny Williams def. Zack Gibson & James Drake
Jordan & Williams won this thing by countout. The story here was interesting, as Gibson got his bell run in the middle of the match and made Drake mostly wrestle on his own, and then forced Drake to walk out on the match even though he was eager to fight. I actually liked this more a scootch than the Grizzled Young Veterans match against Oney Lorcan & Danny Burch from the last Axxess tapings, and while the finish was unsatisfying it was probably the most interesting way to do a cheap heel countout loss. ***½

The show ends with Dunne going through his run as champion and his feelings about losing the title. He’s wants a rematch. Perhaps we’ll get WALTER’s reply next week.
