NXT 349

August 17, 2016 – Winter Park, Florida

This episode is made up mostly of hype videos, but there are a couple matches and a few storyline-moving segments that the typical pre-Takeover episode doesn’t have.

Hideo Itami def. Mustafa Ali
Kind of weird to let Itami just roll over the Cruiserweight Classic roster, but I guess he’s only beating people who’ve already been eliminated. At one point in the match, Ali calls Itami an old man, but they’re only 5 years apart and both over 30. Anyway, this was okay, but pretty short and nothing special. **

Billie Kay barges in on a William Regal announcement and gets herself booked in a Takeover match against the debuting Ember Moon.

Liv Morgan, Nikki Glencross & Carmella def. Alexa Bliss, Mandy Rose & Daria Berenato
It’s beyond weird for me to see Glencross in a not-SAnitY gimmick. This is the final NXT match for Bliss & Carmella. Rose’s career baffles me, as she goes on to appear on only one episode of NXT TV after this, then wrestles in dark matches for a year before showing up on the main roster. Okay, anyway, the match. Glencross is already acting pretty insane, so that’s comforting. All the new ladies performed well, but their timing was lacking. That said the finish was actually pretty dope. **½

The show ends with Byron Saxton, flanked by security guards, interviewing Shinsuke Nakamura and Samoa Joe. Joe makes the point that Regal checked with Asuka before giving Bayley her title shot, while he didn’t do the same with Joe for this title match. Good point, Joe. Nakamura takes issue with Joe calling Antonio Inoke’s LA Dojo “Joe’s Dojo.” Joe loses his temper and the interview ends with security taking him away.
