NXT Takeover Brooklyn II

I watched the Takeover specials before I watched the TV show. So I’m going to add notes to my original reviews now that I have the full context. I’ll put them in red.

August 20, 2016 – Brooklyn, New York

Austin Aries def. No Way Jose
Well, this step down from Shinsuke Nakamura doesn’t seem to bode well for Aries. They laid into each other with really stiff shots here. There wasn’t much interesting here outside of how snugly they worked, and it was kind of disjointed, but it definitely wasn’t boring. And then Hideo Itami returns from a year of healing after the match to save Jose from a post-match beating and that’s a match I’d be curious to see. I don’t think it ever happened in a significant way though because I’m pretty sure he got hurt again like right after this and I think Aries got injured too. **¾ Aries and Itami fought a couple times on house shows but never got a big singles blow off because of their injuries.

Ember Moon def. Billie Kay
So Kay is based on Billie Kent from Boardwalk Empire, right? And Moon is what, a werewolf? This was a really weird match, as you’d think Moon would control the thing, but she got cracked super hard by an elbow in the beginning, then was on the defensive for the rest of the match before hitting a diving stunner for the win. The whole thing was kind of a mess that totally lost the crowd until the finish. *½ I actually hate that finisher. It’s so contrived.

Bobby Roode def. Andrade Cien Almas
This was pretty disappointing. It was mostly boring until the final twenty or so seconds, and I frankly think that that’s a pretty cheap trick. I was never a TNA guy, so I’m hoping there’s more to Roode than this. **½ Maybe a little more, but not a ton. Almas is much better as a heel.

Dash Wilder & Scott Dawson def. Johnny Gargano & Tommaso Ciampa {NXT Tag Team Championship Match}
Wilder was the only person on the main show who didn’t get to be a part of the opening video package. Am I meant to believe he’s worse on the mic than Bayley? Because she is just trash at promos and I can’t imagine anyone not measuring up to her. So yeah anyway this match was sick as hell, and DIY cemented themselves as acceptable replacements for American Alpha headlining NXT’s tag team division. ****¼ Wilder is a treasure on the mic and it was a crime that he didn’t get to say anything in the video package.

Asuka def. Bayley {NXT Women’s Championship Match}
I don’t know what happened here, but this never came together. It went from boring to kind of disastrous, and if it wasn’t for the hot finish it would have been a bomb. I mean, at one point they botched a spot and then repeated it, and it didn’t end up being important to the flow of the match. Really disappointing, especially given the special farewell moment they tried to give Bayley after the match. *** Kind of emblematic of Bayley’s main roster run.

Shinsuke Nakamura def. Samoa Joe {NXT Championship Match}
The main event of the first Brooklyn show is my favorite NXT match to date, so this had a lot to live up to and couldn’t really measure up. I will say that Joe sells like nobody else, which is fantastic for his character because he spends so much time looking invulnerable but when the armor is cracked the selling makes the loss believable. That said, this could have stood to lose five minutes in the middle, as it had my mind wandering. ***½ These two didn’t have the best chemistry.
