Cruiserweight Classic 8

August 31, 2016 – Winter Park, Florida

Gran Metalik def. Akira Tozawa {Quarterfinal Match}
Mauro Ranallo brings up how female-friendly that Dragon Gate is, and I realize that the CWC is similarly effeminate in comparison to the men’s action on the main roster. This made Metalik look like a beast, as he was able to overcome all of the offense that Tozawa used to put others away, even when Tozawa was fighting from behind. I didn’t love the finish, as Metalik kicked out of Tozawa’s finisher and then just popped up and hit the Metalik Driver at 15:49 for the win. I could have used a bit more connective tissue there. ***½

Kota Ibushi def. Brian Kendrick {Quarterfinal Match}
It really bothers me that the big screen says “QUARTER FINALS” instead of quarterfinals. I liked this for all the same reasons I liked Kendrick’s match against Tony Nese. Kendrick knew he couldn’t hang, so he tried trick after trick and when that started working he’d go for the Bully Choke. He also knew that Ibushi’s neck could be exploited so he went after that viciously. I especially loved that Kendrick thought he had the match won when he dodged the Phoenix Splash on put on the Bully Choke. Ibushi, the younger and more skilled opponent, just stayed the course, broke out a couple of his world-ender moves, and was able to overcome. I wouldn’t have been mad at all if Kendrick had won here, as his run in this tournament is a serious highlight in his career. Ibushi won at 13:58 with the Golden Star Bomb. ****¼
