Cruiserweight Classic 7

August 24, 2016 – Winter Park, Florida

Rich Swann def. Lince Dorado {Second Round Match}
Swann won in 8:14 with a Phoenix Splash. They packed a lot of graceful action into this, but none of what happened in the match was as fun as watching Swann moving like Bernie after the match in a combination of celebration and exhaustion. ***

Zack Sabre Jr. def. Drew Gulak {Second Round Match}
I’d criticized that Gulak and Sabre’s first round matches were so close together because they pretty much showed the same story and Gulak’s bit didn’t look as good as Sabre’s. Well, this more or less makes up for that as Sabre outclassed Gulak here, even though Gulak was confident about his ability to match Sabre’s game. The match was bananas, and Sabre ended up winning with a wild pinning counter to the dragon sleeper at 8:27. I could have watched ten more minutes of this stuff. ***½

TJ Perkins def. Johnny Gargano {Second Round Match}
The gimmick here was that Gargano’s leg had been badly injured at NXT Takeover the previous weekend. I’m super impressed with the planning, because this match was taped weeks before the Takeover match. I have to wonder if the commentary was recorded during the initial taping too. If so, I’m supremely pleased they pulled this off. Given that they sold Gargano’s leg on commentary way more than he sold in the match, I think it might have been re-recorded after the fact. DGUSA gets a call-out here. When I saw Gargano win the Open the Freedom Gate Championship, I never in a million years thought I’d hear it talked about on a WWE program. Perkins won in 12:18 with an anklelock after a match that would have been right at home as a dope NXT TV main event. ***½
