WWE ECW 180

November 17, 2009 – Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

CM Punk starts the show with a series of weird brags in a backstage promo. He doesn’t say why he’s back on the show though, which would have been nice. The commentators tell us it’s to preview Survivor Series. Survivor Series was five days away, this was the first time it was mentioned on this show, and nobody on this show was involved in a meaningful way (some of the top guys were shoehorned into other people’s elimination matches, but that’s it).

Zack Ryder comes to the ring for a chat with Rosa Mendes. Ryder wants Mendes in her corner. Mendes’s whole gimmick is that she tells rambling, stupid stories. Yeesh. Ryder wants a rematch with Shelton Benjamin, who is happy to have the match now and to flirt with Mendes. Ryder hits him and says they can have the match later. Who was this supposed to get over?

The Hurricane def. Paul Burchill {Mask vs. Career Mask}
This was billed as Burchill being expelled from ECW, but it actually did spell the end of his WWE career. One kooky TV appearance aside after this he spent the rest of his WWE career wrestling future NXT contestants in dark matches before semi-retiring. This match was way too long, and only interesting for a moment near the end. Hurricane hit an avalanche swinging neckbreaker for the win at 9:56 (shown). *¾

Tiffany is really dismissive of CM Punk’s straight edge lifestyle, suggesting that if you don’t drink you’re not a human being. Is she supposed to be a heel all of a sudden? Christian does it too. I get that Punk was a heel, but ripping on people for being sober is a heel move.

Vance Archer def. Johnny Andrews
Archer won in 1:07 with the inverted DDT. I’m done with this guy. Let’s just fast forward a decade to his New Japan career. N/A

CM Punk & William Regal def. Christian & R-Truth
Most of this was mindless, but a brief exchange near the end made me want to see a singles match between Christian and Punk. Regal saved Punk from the Killswitch by hitting his running knee, and then Punk pinned Christian at 6:57 (shown) by hitting the Go2Sleep. Funny tidbit: this was Christian’s ninth straight main event on ECW, a streak that ended with this match. It was also his first loss, and his first time getting pinned during that stretch, so it almost makes sense that he wasn’t in the main event (or even wrestling) on the following episode. **
