WWE ECW 164

July 28, 2009 – Baltimore Maryland

Tyler Reks def. Paul Burchill
The rematch no one asked for and couldn’t have wanted. Why not do Burchill vs. Goldust here after they set that up last episode? This was a little less forgettable than their first match, but I’m up for the challenge of forgetting it. Reks won in 4:08 with a springboard dropkick. **

Vladimir Kozlov def. Bill Bain
Total Kozlov squash. He won in 1:17 with the Iron Curtain, which is what they’re calling his spinebuster. Kind of a dumb name for a move since the Iron Curtain proved to be temporary. Ezekiel Jackson comes out after the match and hits his finisher on the jobber too, because symmetry I guess. N/A

Shelton Benjamin asks to be on the Abraham Washington Show. Tiffany has to tell Benjamin that Washington doesn’t think he’s entertaining enough. Benjamin stares down Gregory Helms on his way out of her office. Tommy Dreamer was also there for a second but I wasn’t paying attention to why.

Sheamus def. Goldust
This was fine, if fine for you is a wrestling match that’s watchable but completely nondescript. Any two wrestlers could have had this match. Sheamus hit his backbreaker for the win at 5:06. **¼

Christian def. Zack Ryder
Christian cut a promo before the match, throwing it up for Dreamer. That brought out Dreamer, who told Christian that their rematch next week would be an Extreme Rules match. Okay so this match was joined in progress. Matt Striker tries to make a point that a wall is better than any tennis player, but even a beyond basic understanding of that and any game would let you know how dumb that is. Christian hit the Killswitch at 11:36 (shown) for the win after a fun match that actually felt like an appropriate main event for once. If this show can just be Christian beating young guys in competitive and entertaining matches, I’ll sit through a crappy undercard without complaining too much for that. ***¼
