NXT 626

June 15, 2021 – Orlando, Florida

Can we talk about how NXT GM William Regal is going to quit tonight because four women got into a brawl after a match and because the main event slightly damaged the ramp decorations? Don’t get me wrong, this show needs a shake up, but they could have done a better job making the show feel chaotic so this was believable. Anyway, he starts the show by talking about his history with the brand. In doing so, he casually refers to Triple H as just H, which I love. Before he can resign, Karrion Kross comes out. He’s wearing a suit and looks like a human being for once. They really shouldn’t put him next to Regal, who is the same height as him. He says a lot of mean heel stuff, which he should have been doing since the beginning instead of his boring tweener crap. Samoa Joe comes out next. My heart jumped a bit when his music hit, even though it was obvious that he’d be there. I guess he’s still over with me. Regal asks Joe to be the new GM. Joe says no, but says he’ll teach Kross to respect him. So he’s offering to be Regal’s enforcer. Regal says that’s okay, but that Joe can’t wrestle and that he can only use violence if he’s provoked. Kross is intimidated enough to leave.

Tyler Breeze & Fandangodef. Marcel Barthel & Fabian Aichner
The crowd, which is at capacity for this building as far as I can tell, doesn’t care about either of these teams at all. Tag team matches are really tough to watch when it’s quiet. This was no exception as it was mostly boring, mostly unexceptional. Breeze caught Barthel with a roll up for the win at 6:50 (shown of 10:28). Imperium beats up Breeze after the match and drapes an Imperium banner over him. Probably should have just given them the win then, eh? **

Backstage, Adam Cole and Kyle O’Reilly are still fighting so Regal books them in a normal match at the Great American Bash. They also get to pick their opponents for next week’s episode of the show. Cole thinks that’s dumb, and she shoves Joe while trying to get back to O’Reilly. So Joe chokes him out. That was kinda cool, except starting a feud with an unsanctioned match only to finish it with a regular match is dumber than hell. I’m not mad that they’ll have TV time constraints after the indulgently long match they had at Stand & Deliver.

A battery is charging and it’s at 1% (21% percent later in the show). Hey, is Diamond Mine still happening? Late in the show we learn they debut next week. Then, Santos Escobar is still coming for Bronson Reed. He wants a one-on-one match. Later, Franky Monet stirs the pot in the Robert Stone Brand. Later still, Mercedes Martinez watches footage from Takeover. She wants a rubber match against Xia Li and she threatens Mei Ying. Even later, Ever-Rise are mad that Hit Row destroyed their playhouse. I assume this happened on the pre-pre-show at Takeover. After an embarrassing production snafu, Johnny Gargano & Austin Theory celebrate Joe being there, but Joe scares them off. Pete Dunne shows up and is clearly not scared. It feels like they’re teasing a lot of matches they’re never going to deliver on.

Kushida def. Trey Baxter {NXT Cruiserweight Championship Match}
I really like having Kushida on TV so frequently, and I can think of worse ways to do that than having TV matches against guys who were popular on the indies. Baxter, as Blake Christian, was in GCW and NJPW STRONG before this. He kind of looks like Buddy Murphy shrunk in the wash. O’Reilly comes out to watch the match, so hopefully that means O’Reilly vs. Kushida next week. This was a good debut for Baxter. It was structured a lot like Kushida’s match against Carmello Hayes a couple weeks ago. Kushida puts on the Hoverboard Lock for the win at 6:51 (shown of 10:23). O’Reilly challenges him (not for the title) after the match. ***

Ted DiBiase prepares to present LA Knight with the Million Dollar Championship. Knight is uncharacteristically sentimental. DiBiase drapes the belt over his shoulder and they both do the million dollar laugh. Then, Knight decks DiBiase and beats up his security, having gotten what he wants and discarding what he doesn’t need. This was a little awkward and clunky, but it probably ended up in the right place. Cameron Grimes makes the save. Grimes is probably the most over guy in NXT right now.

Raquel Gonzalez & Dakota Kai def. Kayden Carter & Kacy Catanzaro
Shotzi Blackheart & Ember Moon scream at Kai & Gonzalez on their way to the ramp. I’m too old and out of touch to know the different tattooed subcultures, but aesthetically it feels like Carter and Blackheart would make a more appropriate team than they are with their current partners. Catanzaro seems very comfortable in the ring now. Carter looks good too, but why is she ripping Sarray’s kick against the ropes? This was kinda dope. I liked that the baddies got in trouble when they got cocky, but that when Gonzalez decided that the match was over she just obliterated the KCs. Kai hit Catanzaro with the Go2Kick for the win at 9:05 (shown of 12:27). ***¼

Io Shirai is back and feeling good. Before she can say much more, Candice LeRae comes out to tell her to get in the back of the line. Indi Hartwell attacks Shirai from behind. Shirai gets in a few licks but the Way takes over. Zoey Stark runs out and attacks so hard you’d think the Way was handing out COVID vaccines.

Timothy Thatcher & Tommaso Ciampa def. Zack Gibson & James Drake {Tornado Tag Match}
STOP CALLING HIM OLD MAN CIAMPA! He’s two years younger than Thatcher! Knight and Finn Balor are older than him too. If anyone is old, it’s Bobby Fish. What I’m saying is, stop saying that people who are younger than me are the old man of the roster. Thatcher steals MSK’s popcorn on his way to the ring. This was fun and chaotic. Ciampa screams that this was their Takeover, and while this would have been at home at In Your House 2021, I don’t think it was quite up to the level of a typical special. Ciampa & Thatcher put an armbar and anklelock on GIbson at the same time for the win at 13:41 (shown of 17:10). ***½

This episode was a way easier watch than Takeover was. I’m already more interested in next week’s episode than I was for this week’s after Sunday night’s special.
