NXT Takeover: In Your House 2021

June 13, 2021 – Orlando, Florida

This might be the least excited I’ve been for a Takeover special since I started watching them live in 2018. The only match I’m super stoked on is the six man tag, because I think it’s most likely to be the match of the night and it’s the only match of which I’m not certain of the outcome. On an unrelated note, they have packed the CWC with fans.

Sarray & Zoey Stark def. Aliyah & Jessi Kamea
From the pre-show (for the fans in attendance. The pre-show they aired had no matches). The gap in talent between the babyface and heel team here is immense. This turned out to be a totally solid tag team match. The heels didn’t do anything embarrassing and executed their heel stuff quite well. And also, was Kamea always this hot? I don’t want to be one of those guys but… I mean she’s like really hot now. Stark pinned Aliyah after a Bakatare Sliding kick and a flipping Go2Sleep at 7:39. **¾

Bronson Reed, Nash Carter & Wes Lee def. Santos Escobar, Raúl Mendoza & Joaquín Wilde {NXT North American Championship and NXT Tag Team Championship Match}
Great matching gear for both teams. This isn’t the first time a high-profile six man tag has happened in this building, and I hope the crowd gets as loud for this as they did for Halftime Heat. Nope, they did not get as loud. It’s a shame because it’s not like they weren’t given ample reason to get loud. This was a hot opener at a fast clip. It didn’t have much in the way of danger for our heroes, which might have played into the crowd only being invested in the bigger spots. But those bigger spots were fun. Reed hit Mendoza with the Tsunami for the win at 13:36. ***¾

Xia Li def. Mercedes Martinez
This is the first grudge match between two women with no title on the line on a Takeover in over a year. Li bumped around for Martinez more than I expected. They broke out some heavy artillery, but it didn’t amount to much more than Li getting something of an upset victory after a short match. Li hit the jumping roundhouse kick at 7:40 for the win. Li tries to attack Martinez with a chair after the match, but Martinez winds up using it on her and Boa instead. What was the point of giving Li the win if she was gonna get wiped out after the fact? Ah, it’s so that Mei Ying can finally get out of her chair choke Martinez out. Still lame. The crowd is silent for all of this. **½

LA Knight def. Cameron Grimes {Million Dollar Championship Ladder Match}
In general, this was the kind of ladder match I prefer in that they were truer to their characters than they were to setting up and executing ladder spots. But this match had a major flaw in the form today Chekhov’s golden ladder. It was pretty clear the match wouldn’t end before the big gold ladder came into play, so I found myself getting antsy waiting for that to happen. And then once it did happen they started setting up ladder structures and it all started feeling very derivative. Grimes hitting a dive off of the Io Shirai rafter and Knight getting back up immediately really bothered me. Knight threw Grimes into a ladder bridge and grabbed the title at 19:23. Can’t fault them for the effort and hard work, but this was all weak tropes at the end. ***¼

Raquel Gonzalez def. Ember Moon {NXT Women’s Championship Match}
This was looking a bit like a catastrophe in the first few minutes, but they got it together and put on a solid little ditty. Dakota Kai’s mannerisms at ringside helped. Shotzi Blackheart returned to neutralize Kai. Everything after that felt kind of turbulent (bumpy and unpleasant). Gonzalez hit the Chingona Powerbomb for the win at 12:38. Very medium stuff all around. **¾

Throughout the night we got a bunch of Todd Pettingill bits. Some of them are kinda cute. They also announce the return of the Great American Bash on July 6th. And in addition to the tornado tag match this coming Tuesday, Kushida is putting out another open challenge.

Karrion Kross def. Pete Dunne, Kyle O’Reilly, Johnny Gargano, and Adam Cole {NXT Championship Fatal Five Way Match}
Gargano is doing Shawn Michaels’ In Your House gear cosplay. They changed Dunne’s entrance music and I hate it. At least Cole’s new music has some connection to the Undisputed Era song. But it’s also pretty generic. With very little in the way of exception, this was better when Kross wasn’t in the ring. I don’t like how much of the action hinges on people laying around on the floor. You have five guys, why not have those not involved in the primary action in the ring brawl on the floor in between spots? The way everyone focused on Kross so often gave me big time Poochie vibes. The last ten minutes of the match turned it up and were kind of amazing. But while the finish was pretty cool, it’s such a bummer that Kross won. O’Reilly had Cole in a heel hook, but Kross choked O’Reilly out with the Kross Jacket. Cole escaped as O’Reilly passed out, which gave the match to Kross at 26:15. ****

As the show closes, a teary-eyed William Regal leaves the building lamenting all the madness in the company. He thinks it’s time for a change. I wonder if NXT GM Samoa Joe will freshen things up. We can only hope, because this show is super flat right now.
