Pete Dunne nc. Kyle O’Reilly nc. Johnny Gargano {Number One Contender Triple Threat Match}
I guess the tag title match is headlining. Oney Lorcan and Austin Theory are banned from ringside. In the spirit of the first Ring of Honor main event, this had a lot of fun spots that made the most of the stipulation. Adam Cole spoiled the party by attacking everyone with a chair. That brought out NXT GM William Regal and security guards to get rid of Cole. And the match just sort of peters out at 13:00 (shown of 18:37). That sucks, this could have been memorable. ***½
Ember Moon charges out as Cole is being booted from the building. She calls out Raquel Gonzalez. Gonzalez ruhes out and gets booted to the floor. Dakota Kai attacks Moon from behind. Regal is still around and he’s pretty pissed. Then, Ever-Rise and Drake Maverick are in the parking lot when Hit Row arrives. Killian Dain rushes up to bail out Maverick. Later, Indi Hartwell is listening ‘80s power ballads because she’s sad about Dexter Lumis. Later still, Xia Li reveals that she’s targeting Mercedes Martinez because of how Martinez treated her years ago in the Mae Young Classic. She wants a match at Takeover. Martinez says she’s good with that. Lumis finds and puts on Hartwell’s headphones and cries.
Jake Atlas def. LA Knight
Atlas mostly controls the match. Ted DiBiase comes out and the momentum shifts to Knight. My heart sinks when this boring ass match continues through a commercial break. Cameron Grimes comes out as Atlas regains control. A distracted Knight falls victim to the Cartwheel DDT at 9:09 (shown of 12:42). I figured Atlas would win because it’s Pride Month, and where WWE was once cynical and would punish people in their hometowns and during celebrations of their identities, now they’re corporate panderers. And if you think that’s a double standard, they’re a giant company, so yes, whatever they do is the wrong thing. The match got a little bit better as it went, but still had a lame distraction finish. Also, expect Atlas to get no push to capitalize on his two-week win streak. Later, they announce Grimes vs. Knight at Takeover. **¼
Theory and Lorcan argue backstage about the opener as Cole rushes back out to the ring. He complains about not being the number one contender. Karrion Kross comes out dressed like a random dude in a biker gang while Scarlett is done up like Cruella Deville. Why don’t Kross & Scarlett dress like they have the same gimmick? Cole points out what most people think about Kross. Regal won’t let Cole goad Kross into a title match. Kross says he wants to fight everyone in a five-way match at Takeover. Regal is cool with that.
Kushida def. Carmelo Hayes {NXT Cruiserweight Championship Match}
Another open challenge for Kushida. They make it seem like I should know Hayes by the name Christian Casanova, but I do not. Hayes looks nervous here. He’s got some really cool offense, but seemed hesitant to hit some of those movez. On the bright side, he showed some nice personality through facial expressions and trash talk, so there’s a lot of potential there. Kushida put on the Hoverboard Lock for the win at 7:41 (shown of 10:57). Kushida shows Hayes respect after the match. ***
Indi Hartwell & Candice LeRae def. Zoey Stark & Zayda Ramier
Good use of Stark or bad use of Stark? Bad use of Stark. Why is she out there just getting squashed by the tag champs? No thanks. The Way hits their newly named combo on Ramier for the win at 3:37. **
Frankie Monet and her makeup crew celebrate her successful debut. Also Diamond Mine is opening soon. Also, Moon will fight Kai next week and then Gonzalez for the title at Takeover. Also, Poppy will be on the show next week for reasons.
Nash Carter & Wes Lee def. Joaquin Wilde & Raul Mendoza {NXT Tag Team Championship Match}
It’s the 50th anniversary of the WWE Tag Team Championship becoming a thing (under a different name, of course), so it makes sense that this would headline. Mendoza’s tender nose is now protected by plastic. The Grizzled Young Veterans came out but were quickly dispatched by Tommaso Ciampa & Timothy Thatcher. The rest of this match was a biggidy bop. Mendoza & Wilde fully deliver every time they’re given the opportunity to have more than “just another midcard match.” I think they’re the most undervalued team in wrestling right now. But the flashy MSK was very good here too. Santos Escobar got involved a bit, so Bronson Reed came out and smushed him up agains the barricade in a great moment. MSK hit Mendoza with the End Transmission for the win at 11:56 (shown of 15:25). ***3/4
On the one hand, the somewhat chaotic vibe running through the show was a nice change of pace, I found myself bumping up against it and not really enjoying the show except for the main event. It’s probably just that the finish to the opener pissed me off enough that I couldn’t click back in. Also, In Your House is looking pretty weak overall on paper.
