NXT 622

May 25, 2021 – Orlando, Florida

Ember Moon & Shotzi Blackheart def. Dakota Kai & Raquel Gonzalez
This is annoyingly not an official contenders’ match. Moon & Blackheart seem to be channeling Genki Horiguchi & Ryo Saito, and I have no problem with that. The match is mostly Kai getting her ass kicked whenever she’s not cheating, and then Gonzalez saving her and kicking a little ass. Moon counters the powerbomb to a stunner and then she and Blackheart hit Kai with a suplex/DDT combo for the win at 7:55 (shown of 11:26). After the match, Gonzalez reaffirms that she’s a heel by beating the crap out of Blackheart while Kai makes moon watch. Fun little opener here. ***

Tommaso Ciampa & Timothy Thatcher threaten the Grizzled Young Veterans. Later, Boa stalks Mercedes Martinez. Later still, Hit Row talks about taking on the winners of the upcoming NXT Championship and tag title matches. Ashante Adonis also threatens Kushida. I guess BFab won’t be wrestling.

Pete Dunne def. Bobby Fish
Fish’s new music probably sounds too much like Kyle O’Reilly’s new music, but both are really forgettable so maybe it doesn’t matter. This tiny, silent crowd did no favors to this match. They kept things real snug here, and a real crowd (which it seems might be returning soon) I believe would have responded well to this. Dunne catches Fish with the Bitter End for the win at 7:39 (shown of 11:11). After the match,Oney Lorcan attacks Fish and works over his arm with Dunne’s blessing. ***

Mercedes Martinez def. Zayda Ramier
In more matches than not, Martinez does at least one really awkward looking thing. Am I the only one who notices this? She’s got the same kind of indie looseness that Blackheart has, but is way farther into her career. This was a fine squash though, I guess. Martinez hits the Air Raid Crash for the win at 3:27. After the match, the lights go red and when they come back to normal Martinez has a mark on her hand. N/A

Cameron Grimes and Ted DiBiase face off in the ring. Grimes plays it meek, telling DiBiase that he looks up to him and being upset that DiBiase has been upstaging him. DiBiase says he did all that because he sees some of Grimes in himself. So he hates himself? I think that was meant to be sort of trite and shallow but if you think about it it suggests a deeply troubled pathology in DiBiase. LA Knight interrupts, which is fine because this wasn’t going well. Knight wants to be the heir to DiBiase’s legacy. He attacks and lays out Grimes and DiBiase sides with him. People want to cheer DiBiase, so this isn’t the thing to make Grimes a babyface.

Indi Hartwell interrupts Ever-Rise Live while looking for Dexter Lumis. Drake Maverick pops in and directs Hartwell to a dark room. When the lights come on, a bunch of disturbing drawings of Lumis’s broken heart are on the wall. Later, the GYV say they’re done with Thatcher & Ciampa. Later still, WALTER explains why Imperium dumped Alexander Wolfe. He berates Marcel Barthel & Fabian Aichner for losing the tag titles to Breezango forever ago.

Frankie Money def. Cora Jade
All these Ramier matches had me wondering if Jade was still employed. This was squishy as a squash gets. Monet hits a Glam Slam for the win at 3:12. N/A

Bronson Reed comes to the ring to celebrate his title win but he’s interrupted by Santos Escobar. He doesn’t think an Australian should hold the North American Championship. But as a Mexican and thus a North American, he’s taking it. MSK runs out to back up Reed.

NXT GM William Regal announces a number one contender match for next week. O’Reilly vs. Dunne vs. Johnny Gargano gets the winner of tonight’s main event at Takeover. That should be good. The tag title match between MSK and Legado del Fantasma is still on for next week too.

Karrion Kross def. Finn Balor {NXT Championship Match}
It would have been very neat for Balor to win here only to have him lose to O’Reilly at Takeover. If I were them I’d have Balor force O’Reilly to go through him on one of the last episodes of TV before Takeover. It would also work for me if O’Reilly wins the title, Balor challenges him, and O’Reilly finally beats him after Takeover. But watch Kross just win all the matches anyway. This was mundane (though not bad) until the end of the second break. Then, Kross decided he had a personality and started using it. He started kicking out at one, maniacally smiling in Balor’s face, and swatting away Balor’s offense. Balor picked up the pace too, so the energy in the last eight or so minutes of the show was nice. The first match had the more interesting gameplan from Balor, but this had the better Kross performance. I think it’s safe to split the difference and say both matches are about the same quality. Kross put Balor down with the Kross Jacket at 15: 23 (shown of 22:40). ***½
