NXT UK 146

April 29, 2021 – Newham, London

Has Andy Shepherd been in the studio since they started taping at BT Studios? Well, he’s there now.

Teoman def. Rohan Raja
This was the epitome of just a match until the interesting finish. Teoman had Raja in the crossface for way too long, and then had enough and wrenched back, popping Raja’s shoulder out of the socket. The referee called for the bell at 6:02 after checking with Raja to see if he could continue. Do you see how that makes sense, whereas calling a match off the very second someone goes down to a punch in the stomach does not? Anyway, I’m still not sold on either guy. After the match, Teoman calls Raja stupid for trying to be brave and not tapping out. **¼

Mark Andrews, Flash Morgan Webster, and Dani Luna were outcasts by choice in their youth because they wanted to get noticed. They’re from the skating, mod, and punk rock subcultures, respectively, so their group is called Subculture. This trend toward intergender alliances here and on NXT (the Way, Karrion Kross & Scarlett, Jinny & Joseph Conners, Piper Niven & Jack Starz) is curious. I wonder what market research told them to do this. Earlier today, Ilja Dragunov was confronted by Dave Mastiff and an offer to beat the temper out of him. Later, Pretty Deadly say yes boy a lot. So that’s about to hit my group texts pretty hard. Later still, Trent Seven mentions being a founding father of NXT UK, but Sam Gradwell takes offense since he signed at the same time and doesn’t get the same respect. Later still, they hype next week’s Loser Leaves NXT UK match.

Jack Starz brings Kay Lee Ray to the ring for a chat. He tells her that a gauntlet match will be her new title contender. Jinny, Isla Dawn, Xia Brookside, Luna, and Emilia McKenzie. Aiofe Valkyrie just out here undefeated and getting no respect. KLR says she’ll remain the forever champion.

Sha Samuels def. Levi Muir
Muir looked alright here, but this was a squash for Samuels. He hit a spinebuster for the win at 4:03. N/A

Meiko Satomura def. Aiofe Valkyrie
I’d say Valkyrie made the most of the solid chunk of time they gave her against Satomura here. She controlled a lot of this match and looked pretty comfortable doing so. This was far and away her best performance in NXT UK, but that should be true of anyone when facing Satomura. I’ve been watching a lot of Sendai Girls’ Pro Wrestling (Satomura’s home promotion) lately, and this was on the level of some of the stuff I’ve seen there. I don’t know if having Satomura in NXT UK is what brought this out of Valkyrie, but if it is then she deserves a lot of credit because they accomplished a lot here. Valkyrie desperately tried to maintain control, but against Satomura any mistake is deadly. Missing the Peripeteia led to Satomura kicking her to death and hitting the Scorpion for the win at 11:23. Should have been the main event. ***¾

Joe Coffey, Mark Coffey & Wolfgang def. Eddie Dennis, T-Bone & Primate
The Hunt is called Symbiosis now. Well that’s not better at all. This was a fast-paced match given the thick boys involved. I didn’t feel any emotional connection to it though because Gallus as babyfaces who aren’t protecting Dragunov doesn’t so much work for me and Symbiosis is just such a stupid name and I’m not ever that yet. But hey, points to Mark for adding a jumping kick to his repertoire. Coffey hit Primate with AwRaBestFurThaBells for the win at 9:23. The women’s match should have gone on last. Symbiosis has one win over a couple jobbers and now they’re dead in the water shortly out of the gate. That’s not main event-worthy. ***
