NXT UK 88

March 19, 2020 – Coventry, West Midlands

Kay Lee Ray def. Dani Luna
Everyone complains about pre-taped shows until you get a set of unseen wrestling shows in front of actual fans. Sadly, they were pretty quiet for this. But then again it was a squash, so what were they supposed to get excited about? KLR won in 2:36 with a Gory Bomb. Assuming this brand survives the apocalypse, they’re going to have to build up some new women, as they currently only have three in this division who don’t get squashed on a regular basis. One of them, Piper Niven, runs out to save Luna from a post-match beating. N/A

Last week, Finn Balor seemed set to leave NXT UK after his match (baiting WALTER to come to the US), but the NXT UK roster all stared him down and Balor got distracted by Tyler Bate. This week, Bate asked for a match against Balor. Sid Scala says they’ll talk about that later, but in two weeks Bate would in a battle royal to determine WALTER’s next challenger. Pretty clear they were planning on doing Balor vs. WALTER in Tampa and Balor vs. Bate in Dublin. That’s probably all out the window now. Then, we see Nina Samuels watching an Aoife Valkyrie video on her phone.

Ridge Holland def. Joseph Conners
Good use of Conners or bad use of Conners? Good use of Conners. Well, in theory it’s a good use of Conners, as in him losing in a match with no build to Holland is a good idea. But Holland gave up a ton of offense here and I can’t understand why they’d have their undefeated big boy look less than totally dominant. Holland won in 7:45 with the Northern Grit. **

Mark Andrews was attacked backstage, but he’s in too much pain to tell anyone what happened. Trent Seven is on the case, but Gallus denies that it was them and tells Dave Mastiff and Morgan Webster to find a new partner. Also, Ilja Dragunov is a guy you shouldn’t forget about.

Kassius Ohno def. Kenny Williams
I very much appreciated what they were going for here (Ohno countering Williams’ high-flying with mat counters and heavy strikes) but it was not well executed. One or both guys were out of position on more than one occasion. It picked up a bit near the end, but never became anything I’d recommend you fire up the network to watch. Ohno won with the Kassius Clutch at 6:59. **¼

Josiah Williams is with A-Kid, someone who is almost as short as him. Kid is just stoked to be here. Noam Dar crashes the interview because he wants the mic time. Kid takes offense and challenges him to a match next week. Then they hype Jordan Devlin’s title defense against Travis Banks, happening next week.

Mark Coffey, Joe Coffey & Wolfgang def. Trent Seven, Flash Morgan Webster & Dave Mastiff
This was fun and told a nice little tale, as the plucky heroes were able to make strikes on their own, but Gallus’s teamwork was stronger than any one of Webster, Seven, or Mastiff. In the end, Joe caught Webster with All the Best for the Bells at 9:17. Still left unsaid, who attacked Andrews? ***
