January 23, 2020 – York, North Yorkshire
Oh crap, we’re in for six weeks of Aiden English subbing in for Nigel McGuinness on commentary. God help me.
Sid Scala and his boss, NXT UK General Manager Johnny Saint start the show by bringing WALTER and Imperium to the ring to present them with a new, rebranded NXT UK Championship belt. The belt is the same, except with the NXT logo instead of the WWE one. Long overdue. WALTER thanks Saint for getting rid of the title that was polluted by the hands of Tyler Bate and the mouth of Pete Dunne. Dope. Then he rages against the Undisputed Era.
Jordan Devlin def. Ligero
This is Devlin’s third NXT UK win over Liger, but more importantly it’s the second time Devlin has defeated Ligero to qualify for a four way match. The first time was on NXT UK 43, to qualify for a four way number one contender match that Travis Banks went on to win (and then lose in the title match to WALTER). I’d say there’s zero chance of Banks winning this weekend, even though he qualifies for the same four way later on this show. After a hot start, this slowed down but kept the crowd through the force of Devlin’s skill and Ligero’s babyface sympathy. There was some fun “we know each other so well’ stuff in the second half too. Not surprising, as these two have nice chemistry and both of their previous matches were a lot of fun. I actually liked this just a little bit better than those, as it was less disjointed than their first match and felt more important than the second. Devlin won with the Devlin Side at 11:08. ***½
Kay Lee Ray isn’t sweating her opponent Mia Yim at World’s Collide. She leaves and Imperium walks up, only to be approached by Flash Mandrews. The Welshmen tease Imperium for never having won the tag titles.
Ilja Daragunov def. Josh Morrell
How do you say squash in Russian (or German, since Dragunov speaks way more German than Russian on TV)? Morrell snuck in a couple of impressive moves before Dragunov put him down with Torpedo Moskau at 2:25. AFter the match, Dragunov tried to cut a promo on Finn Balor but was interrupted by Gallus. Joe Coffey sends his brother and Wolfgang to the back and then laments losing at Takeover while his boys won. He blames himself, but he also blames Dragunov. Ultimately, Dragunov is an outsider to Gallus, but he is a representative of NXT UK (Coffey;s kingdom) against Balor. So Gallus is letting him live for now, but they’ve got unfinished business after the big show this weekend. I’m super into crime boss Coffey. N/A
Imperium asks Saint for a match against Flash Mandrews and presumably a subsequent shot at the titles. Saint points out that Alexander Wolfe gets involved too much, so Flash Mandrews will select a third and they’ll have a six man tag next week. Also next week, the Hunt will fight Oney Lorcan & Danny Burch.
Travis Banks def. Brian Kendrick
Why is Kendrick in NXT UK now? No idea. Why is he getting a shot at a shot at a title in his first match? No idea. Did Noam Dar miss his flight? This took a long time to make me feel anything. It was technically fine but Kendrick’s shtick seems to be looking bored and I don’t have a lot of room in my fandom for that. I did like Kendrick trying to win the match by countout in a deliberate way, and I like even more that it wasn’t the finish. Banks’s selling in the final stretch was good too. I don’t tend to appreciate when the final few minutes of a match are trying to make me forget the first ten, but it worked on me a bit here. Banks got the win with the Kiwi Krusher at 12:27. ***¼
