NXT UK 43

May 15, 2019 – Glasgow, Scotland

Piper Niven def. Jamie Hayter
This was a really fun squash for Niven, but a squash nonetheless and I don’t rate those. N/A

Toni Storm responds to Nina Samuels harsh words about the Storm family last week. Storm is willing to put her title on the line to get her hands on Samuels, so she’s going to ask the GM for it. Johnny Smith makes the match later on twitter. Then, Kassius Ohno wants to know what Sid Scala and Johnny Saint are going to do about the fact that he wasn’t put in a qualifying match for that big four-way match coming up in a few weeks. Ohno was pretty funny here.

Jordan Devlin def. Ligero {Semifinal Match}
Nigel McGuinness rightly calls out that Ligero’s recent losing streak makes it a mystery as to why he’s in this match. I’ve done a full 180 on Devlin, going from really resenting his presence on the brand to looking forward to his matches and appreciating so many of the things he does in the ring. His selling in particular is really phenomenal. This match suffered from a dead crowd, as it was structured to get huge pops off of big near-falls. Ligero’s weird 50/50 booking made it so that it wasn’t believable that he’d win. Still, it built up nicely as it went and drew me in by the end. After the match Devlin says no matter what happens in the next few weeks, he’s already the number one contender. ***¼

Ilja Dragunov def. Jack Starz
This was a dominant squash for Dragunov. I don’t feel connected to this gimmick, or really understand exactly what he’s going for, and his finisher was uninspiring. I hear great things about him so I’m open to changing my mind. N/A

Mark Andrews & Noam Dar get interviewed together about their upcoming rematch. Dar has realized that he’s a good guy now, which is kind of disappointing. Andrews is excited for the match too.

Killer Kelly nc. Xia Brookside
So, this was weirdly executed. The match barely got going when Jinny’s music hit. She comes out and brings Jazzy Gabert. The match never officially ended, the referee disappeared for no reason, and then Kelly abandons Brookside. Gabert hits Brookside with a dominator. I think they could have handled this a lot better, as evidenced by the dead crowd and the WCW vibe to the whole thing. N/A

Dave Mastiff def. Wolfgang {Semifinal Match}
Wolfgang was over for once, thanks to being in his hometown. Unfortunately for him, he got embarrassed a bit here. On the one hand he did get to lift Mastiff up over his shoulders, but then he lost in pretty short order. In any event, this was entertaining and didn’t overstay its welcome. Gallus beats up Mastiff after the match. **¾
