Fandango & Tyler Breeze def. Chase Parker & Matt Martel
Three of the four wrestlers in the ring and two of the three commentators in the booth (well, one by marriage) are Canadian here. I didn’t get much of a sense of the former 3.0 team here, as this was an opportunity for Breezango to look double tough and finish things off with the Fashion Faux Pas on Parker. **
Jordan Myles arrives at the building with Keith Lee. Myles is nervous, but Lee wants him to be confident. Later, Io Shirai beats up Candice LeRae with a kendo stick in the parking lot. Later still, Cameron Grimes freaks out in the back because he didn’t win the Breakout Tournament. His goal is to be the champion and wear a stupid hat and act like a nut.
Velveteen Dream def. Kona Reeves
This is Dream’s first match on TV since June. He sells like Dwight Schrute so even Reeves looked good when going against him. That said, it was pretty odd that the match was pretty much all Reeves until Dream made a comeback and hit the Dream Valley Driver in the final minute of the match. After the match, Roderick Strong appears on the screen and says he has that new experience Dream was asking for; he sets Dreams beloved couch on fire. **¼
Shayna Baszler will take on Rhea Ripley in a non-title match next week. Neat. Also next week, Johnny Gargano returns to NXT to address his future. And in two weeks, Io Shirai will take on Bianca Belair and Mia Yim in a triple threat match to determine Baszler’s next challenger.
Bianca Belair def. Taynara
So long, Taynara’s last name! The commentators try to say that Taynara’s mean streak here is new, but her gimmick has always been that she’s kind of unhinged and mean. Also that she never wins. This was set up the exact same way as the match before, as Taynara controlled almost implausibly until Belair hit a fall away slam on the floor and then wrecked her opponent until picking up the win with the KOD. At least Belair got to show off a couple new flourishes here. **¼
Adam Cole def. Jordan Myles {NXT Championship Match}
This is the first time this title has been defended on NXT TV in thirteen months. Cole’s title defense against Akira Tozawa in EVOLVE is finally mentioned on NXT TV during this match. Anyway, this was fantastic. They gave this enough time to develop a nice story. Cole was quite dominant, outclassing Myles with his incredible timing and ability to absorb offense that had been successful for Myles in the Breakout Tournament. For his part, Myles was able to frustrate Cole with his speed. Outside of using quickness to fluster Cole, Myles had a really hard time with the champion. But even though Cole controlled so much of the match, the fact that it took him so long to put his challenger away made Myles look great. Cole won with the Last Shot. I think people unfairly dog matches like this because Myles didn’t feel like he had a chance to win. But if the story you’re trying to get over is that the champion is strong and the challenger was able to climb the ranks too quickly, and that story gets told as expertly as it was here, you have to give it the credit it deserves. ****
