NXT UK 61

September 11, 2019 – Cardiff, Wales

Marcel Barthel & Fabian Aichner def. Danny Jones & Harry Green
Imperium start the show with a promo to the tune boos and chants for Tyler Bate. They don’t say anything interesting. The subsequent match was as squishy as you’d imagine. Aichner & Barthel win in 3:19 with the European Bomb. N/A

Sid Scala doesn’t like the way that Kassius Ohno won their match, and with Johnny Saints blessing they’ll have a rematch. Because of Ohno’s boasts that he’s the greatest British wrestler on the planet, they’ll have a British Rounds Match next week. Nigel McGuinness, Johnny Saint, William Regal, and Robbie Brookside give a bit of history on this stipulation, which has never been seen before in WWE apparently. This is more than Johnny Saint has ever spoken in NXT UK.

Jordan Devlin def. Ashton Smith
Smith hadn’t won a match in almost a year, so it was clear he wasn’t winning here. He did his best getting the crowd to buy into his comebacks, but he’s been such a jobber that there was no tricking the Welsch fans. Smith hit a superkick to block a Devlin moonsault while the Irish Ace was upset down, which was dope to see and almost got people to pay attention to the match. Devlin quickly got back in control and won with the Delvin Side (it’s a pun you see: it’s a side suplex and also sounds like you’re saying “The Devil Inside”) at 5:34. **¾

Nina Samuels hijacks an open interview slot when Toni Storm is nowhere to be found. She wants everyone to move on from the spectacle that was Takeover. Later on we learn that Joe Coffey and Dave Mastiff are both out of action for a while after their Last Man Standing match at Takeover.

Tegan Nox def. Shax
Nox won in 27 seconds with the Shiniest Wizard. The most interesting thing about this match was Nox doing her impression of Stone Cold Steve Austin’s knees. Kay Lee Ray comes out after the match, angry that her title win is being overshadowed by Nox’s return. Nox is happy fight anytime. That’s a very nice, organic way to start a new feud for KLR. N/A

Noam Dar holds a press conference about his future. Since Takeover, he’s had a rough couple of weeks and has matured. And now he feels he must announce… that he’s the greatest wrestler. Some of the press are upset that he called a press conference just to brag. Trent Seven can’t believe this is happening, but Dar just insists that someone get him a Supernova 11 t-shirt. Seven calls Drake Maverick and begs him to take Dar back to 205 Live, so Dar walks out.

Mark Andrews & Flash Morgan Webster def. Zack Gibson & James Drake {NXT UK Tag Team Championship Match}
A lot of folks said after Takeover that they’d wished Gallus hadn’t been in the tag title match. I thought Gallus was fine in that match, if not largely influential, and didn’t think that this version without them was worlds better. It was fun, and really made me want to see a Gibson vs. Andrews singles match, it just lacked some of the spark of the Takeover match. Pretty much on par with the Grizzled Young Veterans’ TV defenses, this had a lot of the funky fun exchanges but was a little on the clumsy side without the molten crowd to cover for that. The champs retained at 12:38 when Andrews hit Drake with a Shooting Star Press. ***½
