NXT UK 60

September 4, 2019 – Cardiff, Wales

Rhea Ripley def. Piper Niven
The commentators acknowledged that Ripley would be going after Shayna Baszler, so in the grand scheme of things it’s good that Ripley picked up a strong win here. This was structured similarly to their first match, wherein I felt Niven gave up too much. Here, it worked for me that Ripley would have a lot of control because of the aforementioned bigger program she’s about to be a part of. This also benefited from being in front of the very jazzed up Takeover crowd, rather than the weird crowd at the Download Festival. Ripley hit a hard-fought Riptide to pick up the win after a hard-hitting exchange. The commentators suggest that a rubber match could be in our future, and that’s fine because they’re gelling pretty well and this was better than the women’s match on the main show. ***¼

Sid Scala says that Jack Gallagher isn’t medically cleared to wrestle Kassius Ohno tonight. Ohno approaches him and tells him to find someone fast. Johnny Saint walks up and whispers something curious in Scala’s ear. Later, the Grizzled Young Veterans have to cool down before approaching Saint to ask for a two-on-two match for the tag titles. Saint says he’ll think about it, and moments later they announce it will happen next week. Later still, we see the toll that the Last Man Standing match took on Joe Coffey and Dave Mastiff, and also how bummed Tyler Bate is after losing the main event. And hey, Tegan Nox will make her NXT UK debut next week!

Kassius Ohno def. Sid Scala
Scala wrestled in his button down and dress pants, and he was pretty over with the crowd. It goes to show you that using guys the right way while they’re injured, in the case making Scala the sympathetic authority figure, can do wonders for even the most obscure wrestlers when they return. Scala did a lot of Saint-style stuff here, and it was terrific. Scala had a few really nice comeback moments, but Ohno was able to target his leg and then put him down with the Knockout Elbow to get the win. What a great story and a surprising treat! ***¼
