NXT UK 50

July 3, 2019 – Donington Park, Leicestershire

Piper Niven def. Rhea Ripley
Ripley hijacks the show to make sure this match starts things off, frustrated about this feud going on for three months without a match between them. I had some issues with the pacing here, as they started going at each other ferociously, then slowed things way down for far too long, before bringing back the fire for the finish. After complaining a bit about Ripley selling too much in past matches, I feel weird saying that it was Niven who gave up too much here. All that said, when these two were really after each other this was a fun hang, but it wasn’t as major as I was expecting it to be and I’m kind of surprised they put Niven over clean and seemingly ended the feud here. ***

Noam Dar attacks Kenny Williams from behind and rubs his face into the mud. Later, Gallus has an unintelligible discussion that was probably about beating the Hunt and Dave Mastiff. This needed subtitles. Also, Toni Storm returns to the ring next week. Even later still, Kassius Ohno establishes British Strong Style, Wolfgang, and Mark Andrews as the founding five of NXT UK. That more or less tracks. Then he singles out Andrews as a disappointment. That could be a solid little program.

Alexander Wolfe def. Jack Starz
Starz is pretty much a perfect jobber. He makes everyone he’s in the ring with look like a killer. Wolfe isn’t the most interesting character, but Starz bumped around like a superball for him and at least made me believe that he can be a good enforcer or proxy for WALTER. **

Jazzy Gabert def. Dani Luna & Mercedes Blaze {Handicap Match}
This was a squash for Gabert, who is using a kneeling Dominator as her finisher. This crowd didn’t care. N/A

Zack Gibson & James Drake nc. Trent Seven & Tyler Bate {NXT UK Tag Team Championship Match}
I’m beyond impressed that these guys were able to have a match of this quality in this weird music festival setting. The action built deliberately to a Takeover-level pace, and got the fans whipped up into a frenzy. Sadly, there was no finish as Imperium ran out and beat up everyone, ending the thing. Then they cuffed Seven to the post while WALTER abused Bate. I dig the angle, but am bummed it came at the expense of the match. ***¾
