NXT 514

July 3, 2019 – Winter Park, Florida

Mia Yim def. Aliyah
Aliyah is finally starting to look more confident in herself in the ring, but I’m most thankful that she wasn’t referred to as one of the Highers, which is what she and Vanessa Borne are calling themselves on Twitter. That’s just not even close to good enough to be spoken on TV. Yim got to dominate here, so all is well in the world. Yim runs up on the commentary table after the match and calls out the women’s champ. **¼

William Regal tries to update us on Candice LeRae’s condition after Io Shirai’s attack last week when the Forgotten Sons interrupt him. Regal calls out how dumb it was for them to get themselves disqualified last week, so he considers them at the back of the queue now. Regal is giving Danny Burch & Oney Lorcan an opportunity instead.

Adam Cole pays a visit to Johnny Gargano’s wrestling school (or the school that he was trained at?) and tells the students there that Gargano lied to them when he brought them the NXT title and told them they could win it if they worked hard enough. He brought them pizzas so they can go home, eat a slice, and give up. That was dope.

Kushida def. Jeff Parker
I guess Parker is using his birth name. This was a total squash for Kushida. The commentators said that people on every brand have asked for a match against Kushida, which makes me wonder how he has time for squashes like this. N/A

Tyler Breeze is going to teach the Undisputed Era a lesson tonight. Killian Dain is going to take back what was taken from him. Later, Matt Riddle gives us a glimpse into his mixed-discipline training routine. It’s good for these guys to be setting goals.

Cameron Grimes def. Isaiah Scott {Quarterfinal Match}
Scott’s entrance music is like something out of Steven Universe. They push the narrative that Grimes is a surrogate member of the Hardy family, though he’s got much more of a traditional southern boy vibe. On the bright side, Scott got to showcase a lot in this one appearance he’ll have in the tournament. The downside is of course that he seemed quite a bit more impressive here and that makes it feel like the wrong guy went over. Hopefully Grimes will get to shine a bit more in the future, because he put the crowd to sleep for a good chunk of this inconsistent match. **½

Bianca Belair def. Priscilla Zuniga
Belair looked good here in this recharging squash. I imagine this is what she’ll be doing for the next few months while everyone else of note is tied up in other feuds. N/A

Roderick Strong def. Tyler Breeze
In kind of a neat coincidence, these two were in a pair (each) of marquee matches at the EVOLVE shows this past weekend, both going 2-for-2 against EVOLVE wrestlers, so it’s cool to see them fight each other here. I don’t know if I expected more from this or if this is the speed that a playfield-setting should run, but either way it seemed a half a step behind what these guys are capable of. It wasn’t bad or boring, quite the opposite, but it didn’t come together as anything that I’ll remember a week from now. reDRagon distracting Breeze leading to the finish was also a bummer. ***¼
