NXT 504

May 1, 2019 – Winter Park, Florida

The show starts with a Kushida hype package. I can’t remember the last time I saw NXT make this particular kind of big deal of a debut, wherein his achievements in another company were so specifically acknowledged.

Wesley Blake, Jaxson Ryker & Steve Cutler def. Oney Lorcan & Danny Burch & Humberto Carrillo
This is the first six-person tag match on this show in three months, and if you don’t count Halftime Heat (and you shouldn’t count it), it’s been 10 months since the last men’s six-man tag match on this show. This started out kind of promising, with the Forgotten Sons doing their best to show off their tag team knowhow. Sadly, they’re just really uninteresting characters so the crowd never got behind this match and it sputtered to its finish. **½

Earlier today, Shayna Baszler has a temper tantrum when asked if she’s targeting Io Shirai because Shirai has pinned her and the reverse hasn’t happened. Earlier this week, Mia Yim and Bianca Belair get into an argument at the Performance Center. They’ll fight next week.

Dominik Dijakovic def. Mansoor
Mansoor seems to be settling in nicely to this jobber role of his. He bumped like crazy for Travis Banks earlier on NXT UK, and he took a wild beating here. His hopping enziguiri is a bit contrived, but if he can smooth it out it’ll be a big signature move for him. **¾

Velveteen Dream comes out after the match and sings a custom version of the Star Spangled Banner and it’s the perfect retort to Dijakovic’s dark American dream promo from a few weeks back:
O say can you see, by the Dream’s brilliant light
While you stand there in awe, at Dream’s epic gleaming
While stealing the show, without messing my Fro
Like Riddle’s flip flops, under my massive el-bow
And Buddy Murphy’s red hair, yeah I kicked his derriere
So, please feast your stare, because your family won’t care
O say is that a Velveteen banner I see?
Yes, because I’m the Dream, and this is Dream’s NXT

And while we’re recovering from that bit of brilliance, Mauro Ranallo tries to leech Game of Thrones’ fandom while recapping the issues between Johnny Gargano, Matt Riddle, and the Undisputed Era. Riddle and Adam Cole will square off next week. In a backstage promo, Roderick Strong takes offense to Cole bringing up his loss to Gargano last week and storms off. Bobby Fish is sympathetic to Strong, while O’Reilly backs up Cole. I love this.

Kushida def. Kassius Ohno
Kushida’s Back to the Future entrance is pretty neat, and the crowd eats it up. Nigel McGuinness calls this a dream matchup but calling any Ohno match a dream match at this point is kind of a reach. Ohno controlled a lot of this, even busting Kushida’s nose. This wasn’t as effective as the way Ohno put over Riddle when he debuted (Kushida was made to look foolish a few times here), and hopefully it’s the end of Kassius the gatekeeper in NXT. I dunno, this was technically pretty good, and the crowd stayed with Kushida as he fought from behind the entire match, but personally this wasn’t what I wanted out of Kushida’s debut. Hopefully next time around he’ll get to be just a little more dominant. ***
