NXT 499

April 3, 2019 – Winter Park, Florida

The show starts with the War Raiders squashing a couple of jobbers who never got an entrance, never had their names spoken on TV, never had their names displayed on the screen, and never got any offense. Then they call out another team.

Hanson & Rowe def. Adrian Jaoude & Cezar Bononi
I happen to think the Brazilians are pretty solid in the ring, so I was kind of surprised and disappointed that they got in as much offense as the nameless jobbers (none). They couldn’t just bring out Kona Reeves to take this abuse? N/A

They show the same hype video for Pete Dunne vs. WALTER at Takeover that they showed earlier on NXT UK. Don’t they know I watch both shows?! Then they show a really sweet ad for the WWE Performance Center YouTube channel. I subscribe. It’s good. It might make you cry. It probably won’t but it could. This ad certainly almost did. Also, Candice LeRae is excited for Johnny Gargano’s opportunity at Takeover, but she’s going to be watching the women’s title match too. Aliyah and Vanessa Borne show up and make things awkward and cringey. LeRae is going to fight Aliyah, probably on the Takeover pre-show. Sucks for me (I’ll be there live). What sucks less is the European Union vs. Street Profits also happening on that pre-show (and airing next week).

Jaxson Ryker def. Oney Lorcan
It wouldn’t be a shock if this was Lorcan’s final NXT match, and it’s a bummer of a way for him to go out. Not because it was a bad match; it certainly accomplished making Ryker look like he doesn’t really feel pain. It’s just a shame to see Lorcan get more or less squashed. This could have actually been very good, but Ryker is sort of a stiff and doesn’t seem to be able to move around the ring in any kind of fluid manner. Is he being kept around because he has a cool look? **¼

The hype video for Johnny Gargano vs. Adam Cole is pretty damn great, and almost makes up for the tragedy of Tommaso Ciampa being unable to finish the storyline with Gargano. I really hope that dude doesn’t have to retire. The Velveteen Dream vs. Matt Riddle package is also cool, but less cool. Then they finally address the Dominik Dijakovic vs. Keith Lee angle. Lee is interviewed and says the match was bumped from the tapings because things are too chaotic between them. But the match will happen in two weeks.

Bianca Belair nc. Kairi Sane
Belair is pretty clearly a few levels behind the rest of the women in the Takeover four way, and kind of feels like she’s taken a step backward. Here she bumped awkwardly, never got the crowd engaged, and doesn’t seem to have a great sense for where she is in the ring. Sane on the other hand has the crowd in the palm of her hand. The average match has a crap finish when Shayna Baszler and her goons run in and attack both women. Io Shirai and the rest of the women’s locker room make the save. Belair throws Lacey Lane onto the crowd, then Shirai dives onto everyone and grabs the title belt. Yeah, Belair just isn’t over. **½

Because the Cruiserweight Championship is now an NXT title I’m reviewing every title defense of the WWE/NXT Cruiserweight Championship and posting them on the NXT TV reviews that preceded them. Here’s the title defense from WrestleMania 35 and the rematch from 205 Live two days later.

April 7, 2019 – East Rutherford, New Jersey

Tony Nese def. Buddy Murphy {WWE Cruiserweight Championship Match}
Nese beat Kalisto, Drew Gulak, and Cedric Alexander in a tournament to get this title shot, and then lost his best friend when Murphy subsequently turned on him. Though I feel there was still gas left in the tank of Murphy’s reign, putting Nese over in front of his family isn’t a bad story. In hindsight though, given that it was an international crowd that didn’t care about Nese, it didn’t have the punch it was meant to have. The match was technically quite fine, but the finish was really irritating as Nese barely survived Murphy’s Law, only completely shrug off its affect and hit the running Nese for the win and the title at 10:44. WrestleMania has become so weird. ***

April 9, 2019 – Brooklyn, New York

Tony Nese def. Buddy Murphy {WWE Cruiserweight Championship Match}
This got both the full attention of the crowd and twice as much time as their WrestleMania match. Did it result in a better match? It did, but the problem is they had trouble settling on a cohesive narrative. They had a bit of Nese fighting from behind, but then they went with Nese and Murphy being mirror images of each other. That kind of thing doesn’t lead to the most memorable of matches, or make it easy to stay engaged for twenty minutes. Nese won in 20:04 with the Running Nese. ***¼
