EVOLVE 125

April 4, 2019 – Queens, New York

Adrian Jaoude def. Harlem Bravado
Bravado actually got a little offense in here, which is more than Jaoude’s other recent opponents can say. That said, dude is boring so this wasn’t as fun as Jaoude’s squashes. *

Angelo Dawkins def. Colby Corino
Oh no, Corino is not good. He acts as if he’s in a vaudeville act rather than a wrestling match. Also, the second move he hits in the match is a Meteora, which is some indy nonsense. Thankfully, Dawkins puts him away pretty quickly. After the match, Dawkins asks for another challenge from the Unwanted. They don’t answer, but someone else does. ½*

JD Drake def. Angelo Dawkins {WWN Championship Match}
This was fine, I guess. It never felt like Dawkins had a real chance of winning the title, even though he hit the spear and that move had been established as his finisher in the previous match. At least Drake’s moonsault here didn’t almost kill Dawkins like it did to Ford a few shows back. **¾

Court Moore comes out for one night only to insert himself into the main event title match. But then tells everyone that WWE and EVOLVE both said no to that. So now he’s just here to say goodbye to EVOLVE and to the Stokely Hathaway name.

Montez Ford def. Shane Strickland
This didn’t have a ton of flow, but it was structured like the grudge match it needed to be after Strickland’s attack on Ford on the last show. Also there were a few stretches of really interesting wrestling. It’s definitely not time yet for Ford to be a singles wrestler of any note in NXT, but there’s potential. Strickland was announced as having reported to the WWE Performance Center on April 17th, so this is the last match I’ll be reviewing of his from the EVOLVE side of things (he appeared on the next show against JD Drake in the main event, but wasn’t technically an NXT guy yet so that farewell match is out of my hands). ***

Austin Theory def. Kyle O’Reilly {EVOLVE Championship Match}
This probably didn’t need to go as long as it did, but not because it ever got boring. I just think these guys had a really strong fifteen-or-so-minute match in them and they stretched it out into a pretty dang good match that was longer than that. However, I liked the bit where Theory tried to get counted out and disqualified and O’Reilly had to rally work hard to keep that from happening. EVOLVE is clearly high on the very young Theory, so when he gets a bit older and (likely) gets signed to NXT, I’d like to see a rematch in a more controlled environment. Theory keeps attacking O’Reilly after the match but Roderick Strong and Bobby Fish make the save. That was fun. ***½
