NXT UK 37

April 3, 2019 – Coventry, West Midlands

Kenny Williams & Amir Jordan def. Fabian Aichner & Marcel Barthel
There was a nice speed/flight vs. strength story here, with the European Union only really being able to take control if they were able to block the wild momentum of the high flyers. Some of Williams’ offense was a little indy-bullshitty, but not so much that it got annoying or that it took me too far out of the match. The surprise roll up finish was appropriate and and convincing too. I really dug this. ***¼

Rhea Ripley doesn’t think Piper Niven can take her spot, and she’s going to make NXT UK a nightmare for her. Niven debuts next week. I’m so happy she’s here. Then, Jordan Devlin asks Johnny Saint & Sid Scala why WALTER is being handed a title shot after beating nobody of note while he is ignored. Scala just says the match is set, so Devlin lets them know he’ll be watching. That was a more effective backstage promo than they usually are on this brand.

Kay Lee Ray def. Isla Dawn
They thankfully went the chain wrestling route here, which is the only kind of match I’ve seen Dawn look competent in. Then Ray went ahead and busted Dawn’s face open with a nasty elbow and things picked up in a way I’ve never seen in a Dawn match. Actually, maybe I should stop hating on Dawn so much, because she sold really well for Kay here too. Good albeit brief effort from both ladies, and Kay comes out looking like a killer. **¾

Backstage, Jinny and Toni Storm get into a brawl and Storm gets her ass kicked. They fight for the title next week. Travis Banks then cuts a promo on Kassius Ohno, mispronouncing his first name over and over, telling him he wants a fight. That’ll happen next week too. I think it’s funny that they taped an episode of this show to take place after their next TV taping.

The tag champs come out to the ring looking sharp as hell. James Drake’s assface moniker has stuck, which is a shame for him. Zack Gibson says he’s not medically cleared to compete because Oney Lorcan busted his eardrum. He talks about the waves of wrestling fads that have come and gone, while the Grizzled Young Vets have been superior wrestlers the whole time. I love him ripping on “kickpad” wrestlers. That was such an annoying fad, though Kyle O’Reilly and Travis Banks are solid leftovers. Apparently tonight’s opener has made Williams & Jordan contenders but Gibson thinks they’re just a couple of green doofs. This was a stellar promo, as are so many of Gibson’s microphone presents to us.

Joe Coffey def. Trent Seven
This is a rematch of a stellar match between these two on episode 15. This took a good beat longer to get out of the gate than their first match did, but once it did they were able to bring the heat. Seven sells like Al Pacino in Glengarry Glen Ross, and Coffey is just as much the bruiser here as he was in the build up to Takeover: Blackpool. They’re clearly building up Devlin as the first challenger to WALTER after he (probably) wins the title this weekend, but Coffey might be being built up as a sacrificial lamb for WALTER before the Devlin showdown. ***½

Speaking of WALTER, the show ends with a hype video for the WWE United Kingdom title match at Takevoer: New York.
