NXT 498

March 27, 2019 – Winter Park, Florida

As the show begins, the owner-less NXT Championship is in the ring. Adam Cole comes down and invites Johnny Gargano to the ring so they can face off. The crowd is so split that it sounds like everyone is alternating cheering for both guys. To his credit, Cole runs down the fans and rejects their support. Gargano soaks in the cheers. He calls himself Johnny Takeover, but Cole reminds him that he usually loses at Takeover and calls him Johnny Participation. Then he lists his own Takeover accomplishments. Gargano thinks Cole was handed a big Takeover debut, and then used his cronies to help him win when he’s won. Cole then brings out those cronies to suggest to Gargano that they’ll help him win again.

After their match last week, Amsterdam Black & Ricochet were attacked by the Forgotten Sons. Kinda surprised that clip wasn’t followed by an interview with Black & Ricochet.

Aliyah & Vanessa Borne nc. Kacy Catanzaro & Lacey Lane
This is Catanzaro & Lane’s NXT debut. It’s kinda cute that Catanzaro debuted on what is possibly Ricochet’s final episode. Lane actually gets herself over with a few flips before Shayna Baszler and her flunkies come out. Borne and Aliyah bail and the babyfaces get beat up. Nobody makes the save. N/A

Matt Riddle def. Kona Reeves
It just occurred to me that they’re not even acknowledging that Keith Lee vs. Dominik Dijakovic never happened (Lee is injured). Watching Riddle sell for Reeves is a real bummer. On the bright side, there isn’t a ton of that in this match. The whole thing is almost cut very short when Velveteen Dream is carried to the ramp on a sexy sofa. Riddle works through the distraction and kicks Reeves’ ass. It’s a real testament to Riddle that he kept a Reeves match from getting boring. Dream announces Riddle’s win. Riddle walks up the ramp and breaks up Dream’s party. **¼

Amsterdam Black & Ricochet def. Wesley Blake & Steve Cutler {Number One Contenders Match}
Watching this match was like watching Free Solo, because I was fully clenched the whole time worried that the Forgotten Sons might actually win and get a tag title match at Takeover. I guess in that way I give NXT credit for keeping things tense, but at what cost?! This match was actually a really nice mix of old school tag tropes and Ricochet & Black’s typical exciting style. It’s easily the best Forgotten Sons match to date, and they were wise to make it seem like the Sons were one step behind as long as the match was fought fairly. Now imagine how incredible it would have been if the Forgotten Sons were also interesting characters. Black & Ricochet celebrate like they just won the lottery for a good long time to close the show. Great main event, great segment all around. If this is the last we see of Black & Ricochet at Full Sail, they got a hell of a send off. The War Raiders come down to stare at the Dusty Classic winners and hype their match at Takeover. ****
