NXT UK 36

March 27, 2019 – Coventry, West Midlands

Jordan Devlin def. Dan Maloney
They let Maloney cut loose a bit here, which he hadn’t been able to do at all in his previous NXT UK matches. That combined with a hot crowd gave this little enhancement match for Devlin some juice. **¾

Kassius Ohno comes out because management has asked him to explain why he attacked Ashton Smith last week. He reads a scripted response off of his phone. That’s cute. Then he celebrates how good it feels to knock people out. Then he rips on Travis Banks for being a fake British-style wrestler. I love this gimmick for Ohon.

Dave Mastiff gets video package hyping his strength. Also, Toni Storm will defend her title against Jimmy in two weeks. Then Jinny cuts a promo from the WWE tryouts in India. She brags about WWE sending her to India because she’s better than Storm. She doesn’t mention that she’s Indian, so that’s a bit of a buried lede.

Rhea Ripley def. Xia Brookside
I thought this was going to headline the show because of how Mark Andrews vs. Noam Dar shakes out, but I guess they’re going to show the trainwreck. This match is a rematch from NXT UK 09. This was less of a squash than that match, but not by much. Ripley’s selling is no less ridiculous here than it was during their first match, and it’s something I’m surprised they haven’t had her work on. I suppose this was a notch better than the last time they tangled, but it felt kind of inconsequential given that it actually had some build. After the match, Ripley complains about the lack of competition in the women’s division. That brings out Piper Niven, making me think for the first time in a while that there’s hope for this division. Ripley bails rather than deal with Niven. **¾

Backstage, Isla Dawn has done a face turn so she’s stoked that her countrywoman Niven is in NXT UK. Kay Lee Ray interrupts and says that even though the three of them are all Scotts, it doesn’t mean they’re going to be friends. Then they show a WALTER hype video, and it’s a pretty good one in which the whole roster talks about how tough he is. Also, Trent Steven doesn’t like what Joe Coffey has been saying about him so that’s going to be a match. Then, Marcel Barthel & Fabian Aichner run down the goofy Amir Jordan & Kenny Williams, so they’re going to get rid of those two jokes.

Mark Andrews nc. Noam Dar
What a goddamn travesty. This match was blowing my damn mind right up until Andrews went for a reverse hurricanrana and tweaked his knee. It looked like a freak accident. Andrews had his leg worked over the whole match, and the match is ruled a no contest because neither guy can continue. There hasn’t really been any word on either guy’s injury since, so it’s hard to know how serious any of this will end up being. Still, you can’t take anything away from what they did up until the injury, because it was a fantastic high-flying match with Andrews selling better than I’ve ever seen him do it before. I hope they get a chance to do it again and put a finish on it. They for sure deserved better given that both guys had outer space-themed tights on. ***¾

The show ends with a contract signing for Pete Dunne’s title defense against WALTER at Takeover. Dunne cuts a little bitty promo (only a few words longer than his “you talk too much” bit at his last contract signing) saying he wants this match and that he owns NXT UK. WALTER replies confidently that the title will be his in New York. No violence occurs.
