EVOLVE 120

January 19, 2018 – Queens, New York

Montez Ford def. Eddie Kingston
This one goes back to when Kingston cost Ford his shot at the WWN title. Kingston worked the match with a “hurt” hand after his own match against the WWN champ the night before, and he did a rather convincing job of it. He did a less good job of selling anything else. Even still, the crowd was heavily invested in Ford, so they liked that he won the match despite the fact that Kingston didn’t really bump for Ford outside of the finish. A loud crowd makes everything better. **¾

Josh Briggs def. Angelo Dawkins
This felt like it was going to end when Kingston ran out to attack Ford, brawl to the back, and distract Dawkins long enough for Briggs to boot him down. It didn’t and then it just felt like it went on forever without any change of pace. Neither of these guys is particularly smooth in the ring, so a lot of this looked awkward as well. **½

Darby Allin def. Fabian Aichner
Unlike their match the night before wherein Aichner didn’t turn heel until the finish, the Italian was a villain the entire time here. The match played exceptionally well off of their bout the night before while being markedly different. That’s so goddamn impressive. Aichner was brutal with Allin, so Allin spent most of the match on defense trying desperately to take shots at Aichner’s leg. In the end it was thanks to a more aware referee and Allin’s Sharpshooter roll-up that the little guy was able to get the win. In a vacuum the first match is superior. But wrestling doesn’t exist in a vacuum and this was a great sequel. ****

Johnny Gargano def. Austin Theory
Theory’s title wasn’t on the line here. Gargano came out to his NXT music, bumming me out after the Don’t Die Digging tease on the last show. This was a weird one. They started wrestling a match that you could arguably call Gargano’s Takeover style, but then the ref got bumped, Priscilla Kelly, Allin, and Briggs all interfered (the first two attacking Theory, the third attacking Gargano), the interference got a near-fall for Theory, but then Gargano turned around and tapped out the champion without much trouble. If they were going to book a ton of gaga anyway then Allin’s interference should have led to Theory’s loss. That ending was really, really bad, and made the champion look like a dweeb. Also, if you’re going to have Kelly get her revenge, why do it in a meaningless non-title match? So frustrating. ***¼
