EVOLVE 119

January 18, 2019 – Brooklyn, New York

Fabian Aichner def. Darby Allin
I’ve come to terms with the reality that Allin is the best thing about these EVOLVE shows and WWE shit the bed by missing out on him and not putting him on 205 Live. I’d watch AEW TV for this dude. He and Aichner pulled so much creative junk out here, from swinging Allin back and forth between perpendicular guardrails, to fantastic use of the ropes as a weapon, to Aichner’s selling convincingly giving Allin the upper hand in an exciting moment. Damn I loved this. Aicher won by dragging Allin off the turnbuckle by his belt and then putting his feet on the ropes. That heel turn worked in a big way. Allin fights back after the bell. They’ll fight again tomorrow. Yes, yes very much yes. ****

Angelo Dawkins & Montez Ford def. Adrian Alanis & Leon Ruff {EVOLVE Tag Team Championship Match}
Alanis & Ruff earned this title shot earlier in the show. This started pretty strong, highlighted by Dawkins really embarrassing Ruff and Ford having the time of his life watching it. But then it became a standard tag match. The crowd was into it, but that’s mostly because EVOLVE fans inherently dig the Street Profits and the Skulk. **¾

Johnny Gargano & AR Fox def. Austin Theory & Josh Briggs
This one was a little too cute by half. The second half of the match was mighty over-choreographed, which kept me from feeling invested. There wasn’t much urgency to the proceedings either. The live crowd definitely got what they wanted, which was Gargano doing Gargano things and a few nods to DIY. After the match, Gargano says that he’s feeling a little weird about using his NXT theme song in EVOLVE, so wants to leave to his EVOLVE music. Before he can, Theory attacks him. That’s a great heel move, because I miss the crap out of Don’t Die Digging. **¾
