NXT 480

November 28, 2018 – San Jose, California

It’s that time of the year when the holidays necessitated that a few matches at a house show be filmed for an episode. This was taped the night before Takeover, but the foresite to film at least one match that plays off of a match filmed in Los Angeles while not being a crazy spoiler is fairly impressive. The crowd is very dimly lit, which is good because photos of the action live showed a sparsely attended event.

Danny Burch & Oney Lorcan def. Nick Miller & Shane Thorne
The nice thing about taping matches at a house show is that matches that normally would get very little time get more of a chance to be fleshed out. That was the case here. The Mighty are still kind of boring as heels, but Lorcan and Burch are always a blast and they actually told a pretty good story here about the babyfaces losing control every time they started moving too fast. The Mighty attacks after the bell. ***

Kairi Sane accepts the referees decision from Takeover, but she’s not done with Shayne Baszler. Dakota Kai is helping Sane because of her history with Baszler. Io Shirai is Sane’s best friend, so she wants to help protect her. They want a six-woman tag match.

EC3 def. Marcel Barthel
We get a reminder that EC3 pinned Adam Cole, only to be injured by the Undisputed Era after the match. This was just shy of a squash, as Barthel gets rather dominated and sent packing to NXT UK. After the match, EC3 puts Bobby Fish on notice. **

Looks like Chris Dijak is finally getting a proper debut in NXT where he’ll be called Dijakovic. Also, Candice LeRae isn’t answering anyone’s questions.

Mia Yim def. Vanessa Borne
There wasn’t much doin’ here. Borne still seems uncomfortable and she had to control too much of this short match. Let’s get Yim out there with someone good. *½

Tommaso Ciampa will return to NXT next week, and he wants everyone to follow his lead. Trench coats for everyone, I guess.

Lars Sullivan def. Keith Lee
I was hoping for a carbon copy of Lee’s match against Brian Cage from Beyond, but what we got was something a tick or two more deliberate. It was a fun big man battle no doubt, and appropriate for its place on NXT TV. I believe this will be Sullivan’s NXT swan song as he moves on to the main roster (though if that’s the case, having him end Lee’s undefeated streak seems a bit unnecessary), but I wouldn’t be crushed if he worked one final NXT taping set. ***¼
