NXT UK 01

October 17, 2018 – Cambridge, Cambridgeshire

I really dig the opening video and music. There’s a nice bit of continuity as its an extended version of the music they’ve been using for the UK shows to date.

Joe Coffey def. Mark Andrews
This stems from the Coffey brothers attacked Andrews (and a couple other dudes) during the fatal four way over the summer in Royal Albert Hall. This was probably the most professional that Andrews has looked from what I’ve seen, as he’s tightened up his offense and pulled back on the flippy hack shit. Coffey is a little slow, but he’s a big dude and this brand needs those. Good stuff. The Coffeys beat up on Andrews after the match until Flash Morgan Webster (another victim of theirs at RAH) makes the save. ***

Mustache Mountain comes out, and those boys are really over. And why shouldn’t they be, what with Trent Seven having the voice of an angel and all? He and Tyler Bate lament having lost the NXT tag titles since they last wrestled in England, but they remind everyone that there will be NXT UK tag belts. But there aren’t a lot of tag teams in this company, so Mustache Mountain wants people to start buddying up so they can have some competition.

Dave Mastiff def. Sid Scala
It’s pretty bold for someone to have Sid as part of their wrestling name. He has a lot to live up to. Mastiff’s beard makes him look a lot fatter than he is. I don’t review squashes, but I can say without a doubt that I’ve never wanted to see a match more than I want to see Mastiff vs. Otis Dozovic. N/A

Toni Storm def. Nina Samuels
What is Storm’s gimmick exactly? I’ve always gotten a TJ Detweiler viber from her. I find her very endearing regardless. I do not have the same feelings about Samuels, who was about as vanilla as it gets here. She seemed kind of apprehensive at times too. **¼

Pete Dunne def. Noam Dar {WWE United Kingdom Championship Match}
Looks like they’ve officially rebranded the title as an NXT one now. It’s been so many months since Royal Albert Hall that I forgot that the four way there was a number one contender match. Yes, I know this was taped a while ago, but I live in the WWE Network universe, baby. This is the third one-on-one match between the two and Dunne won both of their previous bouts. As for this match, listen up internet nerds: this was better than the triple threat for the North American title last week. That match relied really heavily on indy nonsense and final stretch trickery. This had none of that. It was just a dope, competitive match between two cocky guys who both thought their game plan was stronger than the others. When Dar flashed his pinky to Dunne early on and Dunne did nothing, I found it puzzling, but then it came back in the end and led to Dunne smashing the pinky and leading right into the finish. Brilliant stuff, and a great way to officially kick off the brand. Dunne and Dar tease each other after the match, and I want a rematch stat. ****
