NXT 416

October 18, 2017 – Winter Park, Florida

Ember Moon def. Ruby Riott & Sonya Deville {Triple Threat Contender Match}
I’m annoyed, because this match featured an Eclipse that didn’t register on the CES, and then after hitting it on Deville, Moon covered Riott for the win instead! This wasn’t that much better than last week’s three-way, but it was a little better. **

In the back, Roderick Strong declines to wear an Undisputed Era shirt when it’s offered to him. Also, the Iconic Duo try to butter William Regal up with Australian slang, but he says Billie Kay will have to get through a battle royal to get into the Takeover four way for the women’s title.

Amsterdam Black def. Raul Mendoza
Mendoza gets in a little offense thanks to Velveteen Dream coming out and putting on Black’s vest, but it lasts about a minute before he gets hit with the roundhouse kick. Dream leaves with the vest when Black refuses to look at him. N/A

Drew McIntyre sits down for an interview that’s meant to be soft and heartfelt, but honestly is just kind of monotone and boring. But then Zelina Vega relieves the interviewer and asks McIntyre why he’s dodging Andrade Cien Almas. McIntyre wants Almas to tell him to his face that he wants the match. That was a nice callback to Roderick Strong doing the same thing.

Kassius Ohno def. Cezar Bononi
I like the way it feels to type Bononi’s name. This was short, heatless, and boring. *½

Adam Cole, Bobby Fish & Kyle O’Reilly nc. Eric Young, Killian Dain & Alexander Wolfe
This was a really non-descript match that went on and on without any real flow (but had solid action) until the non-finish wherein the Authors of Pain returned to NXT to attack the loons that took their titles. **½

Because the Cruiserweight Championship is now an NXT title and I’m reviewing every title defense of the WWE/NXT Cruiserweight Championship and post them on the NXT TV reviews that preceded them, here’s the title defense from TLC 2017 and 205 Live two days later.

October 22, 2017 – Minneapolis, Minnesota

Enzo Amore def. Kalisto {WWE Cruiserweight Championship Match}
Amore is just garbage as a heel, because he has to control most of the match and he has zero to back that up. This was super crazy boring. Amore won in 10:51 with a poke to the eye and the Jawdonzo. *½

October 24, 2017 – Milwaukee, Wisconsin

Kalisto def. Enzo Amore {WWE Cruiserweight Championship}
Contractual rematch after contractual rematch. Kalisto pinned Amore the previous night on Raw, but that seems totally incidental. What a creatively bankrupt angle. Amore has Ariya Daivari with him to cut a promo because he lost his voice. They tried to get cute by playing off of the crap finish to the PPV match early on here, but then they had a different crap finish here so what’s the point? I did like how Kalisto desperately scrambled to get Amore back in the ring when the champ tried to escape and lose by count out. The crowd liked it too because that’s the only thing they responded to here. Then Amore just kicked the referee like it was nothing and got disqualified at 6:18. Even the referee looked bored while he was calling for the bell. *
