Mae Young Classic: Season 1 – Episode 7

September 4, 2017 – Winter Park, Florida

Mercedes Martinez def. Abbey Laith {Quarterfinal Match}
They lost steam after a big spot down the stretch, but up until that point they’d had the crowd really engaged here. **¾

Shayna Baszler def. Candice LeRae {Quarterfinal Match}
This was not how I expected this one to go, as they entered the finishing stretch almost immediately and LeRae dominated it. Baszler got out of this one by the skin of her teeth, and so to get her heat back she kept her choke on for a bit after the bell. Surprised they kept this so short. And then Baszler fully turns heel by kicking LeRae while Johnny Gargano is checking on her. **½

Toni Storm def. Piper Niven {Quarterfinal Match}
Like the first match, this also lost just a bit of steam near the end. Actually, that might have been something personal to me, because I was on the Niven train and when Storm kicked out of her finisher the writing was on the wall. Personal disappointment aside, they did great work here. ***¼

Outside, there’s a cringey meeting between the wrestling Horsewomen and the MMA horsewomen that of course goes nowhere ever.

Kairi Sane def. Dakota Kai {Quarterfinal Match}
It’s pretty annoying to me that WWE trots out Shinsuke Nakamura and Funaki to be in the crowd for Sane’s matches. If they show Hideo Itami in the crowd for her semifinal match and Asuka in the finals I’m going to lose my damn mind. Kai doesn’t do it for me really, and she had more or less the same performance here as she did in the previous two rounds. Sane is a global treasure, however, and the floor for her matches is pretty high. **¾
