Mae Young Classic: Season 1 – Episode 6

September 4, 2017 – Winter Park, Florida

Toni Storm def. Lacy Evans {Second Round Match}
This was a little short, a little basic with a few flourishes of fancy, and pretty good. **½

Shayna Baszler def. Mia Yim {Second Round Match}
Baszler’s selling and bumping was pretty weird here, but other than that this helped make her seem pretty dangerous with that choke. It didn’t make her seem particularly dangerous otherwise, and Yim is the more fun and dynamic wrestler, but I’m not mad about the choice to put Baszler over. After the match there’s a wrestler Horsewomen vs. MMA Horsewomen stare down that is guaranteed to never get paid off. Hey, remember when you had Tessa Blanchard in your tournament and didn’t sign and push that actual daughter of a Horseman? **¾

Dakota Kai def. Rhea Ripley {Second Round Match}
This was really similar to Kai’s first round match, in that she hit a couple of nice kicks (and took a few gnarly bumps) but it didn’t amount to much overall. **

Candice LeRae def. Nicole Savoy {Second Round Match}
This time around, Jim Ross does mention that LeRae won a title in PWG, which doesn’t have a women’s title (so logically it was a title typically held by men). Also, very weird and cool to hear PWG be mentioned by Jim freakin’ Ross. The most interesting part of this match for me was Lita repeatedly saying “straight Juji” on commentary. The kids are really into that straight juji these days. This was pretty meh. **

This side of the bracket was a lot less impressive, though they’re doing a good job of making me believe that LeRae is meant to be the Cinderella of this tournament.
