NXT 400

July 5, 2017 – Winter Park Florida

Alexander Wolfe & Killian Dain def. Hideo Itami & Kassius Ohno
The only thing interesting about this match was Wolfe purposely taking the Go2Sleep so that Dain could surprise Itami with a crossbody and get the win. **

At the Performance Center, Ruby Riott tells Ember Moon that Moon and Nikki Cross have gotten their shots, but she hasn’t so she’s next in line. Riott just lost two title matches to Asuka. The writing on this show remains awful in a lot of places.

In a very ambitious segment, the Mae Young Classic gets mentioned for the first time on NXT TV while Billie Kay and Royce Da 5’7 (who aren’t in it) complain that nobody remembered Kay’s birthday except Royce. They storm off and the focus shifts to Zelina Vega arguing with Andrade Cien Almas. Speaking of the Mae Young Classic, Bianca Belair defeated Aliyah in a dark match qualifier for the tournament last week. Nobody really explains what the Classic is.

Bobby Roode def. Roderick Strong {NXT Championship Match}
I appreciate a lot of what they did here. The match was competent, and at times pretty exciting, throughout its entire run-time. The false finish and the actual finish were both fantastic too, but the match never stuck into a groove that was captivating for a long enough stretch for me to feel all that connected to it. I feel like we have to see a rematch now, and I’ll be very interested to see how they handle Strong in the wake of this match. ***¾

Because the Cruiserweight Championship is now an NXT title and I’m reviewing every title defense of the WWE/NXT Cruiserweight Championship and post them on the NXT TV reviews that preceded them, here’s the title defense from Great Balls of Fire.

July 9, 2017 – Dallas, Texas

Neville def. Akira Tozawa {WWE Cruiserweight Championship Match}
Tozawa had joined up with Titus O’Neil before this, and O’Neil negotiated this title match for him. Hearing Corey Graves on commentary going on and on about the Power of Tozawa and the Neville Level makes it very easy to understand why young viewers would cringe at this product and be drawn to any of the competition (except ROH, because that’s basically unwatchable these days). Speaking of (former) competition, these two had a pair of amazing matches in Dragon Gate USA, and this wasn’t even a shadow of those. This peaked way too early, and had a crappy finish that saw Neville hit a pair of lowish blows at 11:36 for the win. Very disappointing. **½
