NXT 396

June 7, 2017 – Winter Park, Florida

Otis Dozovic & Tucker Knight def. Lars Sullivan & Victor Andrews
I don’t get why they debuted Sullivan under his real name, only to give him this name one match later. I don’t get a lot of things. I like when Percy Watson uses a word that he clearly misunderstands and Todd Phillips has to politely find a way to correct him. It’s my favorite. Sullivan beats up his partner after the match again, and I’m afraid I’ve found a flaw in this angle. Sullivan clearly isn’t that motivated to win, because he doesn’t even use his one save when his partner is in trouble. I like this more than the typical squashes they usually use to introduce new guys, but they’re going to need to explain that Sullivan actually enjoys beating up his partners to make this make sense. *

Roderick Strong comes out to the ring to thank the fans and talk about his gratitude for all the great things in his life. But now that we know about his family, he has to try for his fiance and son to become NXT Champion. Bobby Roode comes out wiping away alligator tears. He calls Strong a “good hand,” tells him to stay in his lane, and walks out. And that’s it. Uhh ok.

Royce Da 5’7 def. Sarah Logan
I don’t review squashes… but this was bad. N/A

Last week after his upset loss, Andrade Cien Almas was going out to party with Vanessa Borne, Reina Gonzalez, and a woman I don’t recognize when he is accosted by Zelina Vega, who slaps him and walks off.

Hideo Itami nc. Oney Lorcan
Before the match, a backstage interviewer asks Itami if his loss at Takeover means he’ll go back to Japan. Tye Dillinger, Austin Aries, Baron Corbin, and a host of other people who never won the title were never asked if they were going to go back home, or back to the indies, or back to football. It was always, “what’s next for you?” They didn’t ask Jack Gallagher if he’d go back to England after losing to Tyler Bate. These things are really subtle and small and not worthy of outrage on their own. But cumulatively they make watching wrestling feel kind of gross. During the match, Watson says that Itami is kicking in the “Kobayashi style.” He meant Kobashi style, but Itami’s real name is Kobayashi so it works out and is another hilarious Watson flub. Itami finally wrestles in his big NOAH match style, and it’s fantastic, but the match doesn’t have an ending as he hits Lorcan with three Go2Sleeps and Kassius Ohno runs out to stop him from hitting more. Would have been more fun with a finish. ***

Killian Dain def. No Way Jose
This was fine, just fine, as most things involving SAnitY are. Not sure how much use I have for Jose at this point. **½

That’s it for the episode, but there’s more wrestling to talk about! In January 2019, to hype up NXT UK Takeover: Blackpool (that brand’s first live special), WWE released a few matches featuring British wrestlers in the Hidden Gems series on the WWE Network. One of those matches happened on an NXT house show in England, so you get it served up here.

Pete Dunne def. Mark Andrews {WWE United Kingdom Championship Match}
First off, points for having the camera man stand so close to the ring that it didn’t matter that the ring wasn’t mic’d; the sound registered just fine on the camera’s microphone. This wasn’t quite as good as their TV match from February, though given that it was only a minute shorter and structured similarly it was probably the lack of production value that made me feel that way. Still, these two have good chemistry so I’m cool with them running a circuit with this match. ***
