NXT 395

May 31, 2017 – Winter Park, Florida

Tommaso Ciampa starts the show to provide an explanation as to why he turned on Johnny Gargano at Takeover. He’s on crutches. Ciampa had gotten injured a few days before Takeover, and there was a conversation online about replacing him in the ladder match. He fought in the ladder match despite his injury, and in that match he was injured even worse. Knowing that he was going to be out of action after the match, he knew that Gargano would replace him. So he decided to take Gargano out. Ciampa will be out for a while, and he’s going to come back as the most dangerous man in NXT history. For his part, Gargano is at home not talking to anyone.

Pete Dunne def. Danny Burch
First things first, it was good to see Burch finally getting the respect he deserves on NXT TV. These guys delivered eight minutes of hard-hitting action and had the crowd loving it. ***¼

Cezar Bononi def. Andrade Cien Almas
NXT had finally gotten around to actually putting Almas on a losing streak going into this, and after dominating Bononi, Almas got caught with a quick roll up. After the match, an intoxicated-looking Almas shrugs off the loss. N/A

After his title loss to Bobby Roode, Hideo Itami trashed the locker room and blew off Kassius Ohno. Itami was clearly shouting in Japanese, but it was all bleeped out because NXT is xenophobic? Earlier today, cooler heads prevailed and Itami and Ohno reconciled.

Roderick Strong & Kassius Ohno def. Eric Young & Alexander Wolfe
This was fine, just fine. Things got a little nutty at the end, with No Way Jose returning to NXT to stop Killing Dain from interfering and giving Strong a chance to pin Young. I’m not sure where Jose was. He wasn’t injured, and the commentators make a very big deal about the fact that he’s been off TV. Wonder how they’ll explain that. **¾

Because the Cruiserweight Championship is now an NXT title and I’m reviewing every title defense of the WWE/NXT Cruiserweight Championship and post them on the NXT TV reviews that preceded them, here’s the title defense from Extreme Rules 2017, and the one from 205 Live two nights later.

Neville def. Austin Aries {WWE Cruiserweight Championship Submission Match}
Aries made Neville tap out to the Last Chancery in a tag match in the lead up to this match. Neville won in 17:26 with the Brutalizer. I found it kind of irritating that the same referee officiated this match as did their last match where he made a suspect disqualification call. This match was technically pretty good, but there wasn’t a ton of drama to it thanks to an awkward flow. I also think this could have lost a few minutes, as the final stretch felt a bit meandering. I also could have done without seeing Aries being conscious and then just taking the Red Arrow when he could have moved. Points for trying, but this was the least impressive of their matches. ***

Neville def. TJ Perkins {WWE Cruiserweight Championship Match}
Perkins helped Neville beat up Aries during their feud, so Neville granted him this shot (though he attacked Perkins from behind before telling him he could have the match). Neville won at 14:09 with the Brutalizer. This was basically an overlong squash, but I never felt bored. I never felt like Perkins had a chance in hell. So now, having dominated the winner of the Cruiserweight Classic, Neville looks unstoppable heading into his next feud. **¾
