NXT Takeover Rival

I watched the Takeover specials before I watched the TV show. So I’m going to add notes to my original reviews now that I have the full context. I’ll put them in red.

February 11, 2015 – Winter Park, Florida

Hideo Itami def. Tyler Breeze
Itami beat Breeze in a number on contender’s match, then lost to Finn Balor. Breeze thought he could have beaten Balor, so he attacked Itami and here we are. I’m not sure what happened in this match. The bulk of it was Breeze destroying Itami’s leg, and then Itami just pretends that didn’t happen and kicks the crap out of Breeze to win. I’m not into it. **½ It’s a real bummer because their first match was stellar and they have an upcoming house show match (which is on the NXT Greatest Matches Volume 1 DVD) that’s also a riot. Itami is real hit-and-miss in NXT.

Baron Corbin def. Bull Dempsey [No DQ Match] You’d think this would get more than 5 minutes, since it was built up over the last 3 shows. It didn’t, and I guess it was fine aside from a weird spot where they screwed up who was supposed to shove who over the top rope. Corbin is not a compelling individual. ** He certainly isn’t and he never becomes more compelling. Dempsey just got embarrassed in this feud.

Blake & Murphy def. Kalisto & Sin Cara [NXT Tag Team Championship Match] This was pretty fun, but I also have a problem with this style of match wherein a guy takes a massive amount of head trauma, but if he rolls through the pin it’s as if he was never hit. Seems irresponsible to me. *** A lot of lucha type stuff is irresponsible. I’m very curious to see where this Blake & Murphy title reign goes.

Finn Balor def. Adrian Neville [Number 1 Contender’s Match] As bummed as I am to see the New Japan alum beat the Dragon Gate alum, this was pretty much exactly what you’d expect from these two in a big match environment. I think the stronger finish would have been Balor winning after blocking the Red Arrow, though. **** This match saved the show, so I’m not sure why I thought to complain about it. It’s great.

Sasha Banks def. Charlotte, Becky Lynch & Bayley [NXT Women’s Championship Match] The commentators start off by basically saying that none of the challengers are deserving of this title shot. I don’t think they’re very good at this wrestling commentary thing. Over-hyped at the time, this match was kind of a mess, with no real flow or heat despite the efforts of all involved, especially Bayley. The finish felt tacked on, and very surprising. *** The finish was less surprising in the context of what was happening on the weekly show, but the whole division was in a lull around this time so I’m not surprised they didn’t blow me away here.

Kevin Owens def. Sami Zayn [NXT Championship Match] I didn’t really care for this match. Sure, it had an effective narrative: Owens is a prick who would abuse his friend to the point that he’d win the title by referee stop. But that finish is heatless and there was nothing in the overlong match to build to it until the last five minutes. Points for hitting each other real hard some, I suppose. *** This feud was a bit problematic like that. The build was great, but necessitated Owens being rather emotionless and stilted. Things turned around for him and the title in a huge way once he moved beyond Zayn.
