I watched the Takeover specials (and Arrival) before I watched the TV show. So I’m going to add notes to my original reviews now that I have the full context. I’ll put them in red.
December 11, 2014 – Winter Park, Florida
Kevin Owens def. CJ Parker
I like Kevin Owens. I like CJ Parker’s theme music. I like palm strikes that draw hardway blood. I liked this little match. **¾ All of these things remain true. I do feel a little guilty about celebrating Owens’s broken nose, but then I did the same to Alexa Bliss a few weeks ago so at least I’m consistent.
Sin Cara & Kalisto def. Simon Gotch & Aiden English {NXT Tag Team Championship Match}
The NXT tag team division is proof that unlimited resources don’t make indy gimmicks look better. Also, this match was pretty boring. Does NXT need tag team wrestling if this is how they execute it? *¾ In context, things were starting to finally turn around. The Lucha Dragons had been putting on fun matches on TV, and the Vaudevillains were starting to improve. This feud was cartoony as hell though.
Baron Corbin def. Tye Dillinger
Who cares, amiright? Corbin was distracted by Bull Dempsey for a second here, but then won the squash anyway. Both these guys won squashes on the last show, so why not just have them fight here? Maybe because that match is going to suck too. N/A TV leading up to this point also pointed at Dempsey and Corbin fighting here, and everything else was just a waste of time.
Finn Balor & Hideo Itami def. Konnor & Viktor
This is the best they could put together for Japan’s finest? I’d honestly already forgotten that the Ascension attacked Itami in his debut, that’s how forgettable they are. And then the match is a total snooze because the Ascension controlled almost all of it and Itami really didn’t get to do anything of note. At least the new guys went over. ** Itami not getting to do anything of note was a pattern throughout his NXT career.
Charlotte def. Sasha Banks {NXT Women’s Championship Match}
Charlotte can basically do no wrong. This felt a little lighter and more playful/less serious than the Women’s Championship matches on the last two shows, but these ladies still move around the ring with more comfort than most of the men. Damn. ***½ Banks’s learning curve was coming along quickly, and it took a sharp turn for the better after she won the title.
Sami Zayn def. Adrian Neville {NXT Championship Match}
Zayn’s career was on the line if he didn’t win the title. I don’t know what I would have thought of this one if it wasn’t for the crowd. In today’s “shades of grey” atmosphere, you really don’t get crowd support for one guy like this, and heat for his opponent just because he’s the obstacle in their hero’s way. The match told a great story too, with Zayn feeling like he should be more ruthless because his scruples had been holding him back, but then it was sticking to his moral ways that won him the match in the end. **** Zayn’s career being on the line was self-imposed, and could only be enforced by him. I still think this was a few minutes too long and thus not as good as their title match on “TV,” but it was a beautiful culmination for the wonderful feud.
