August 1, 2012 – Winter Park, Florida
Dusty Rhodes starts the show by announcing the 8-man Gold Rush Tournament to crown the first NXT Champion. I’m happy there’s going to be some direction on the show, and that all eight guys have been at least relatively well featured on the shows so far. Both quarterfinal matches on tonight’s show are rematches from recent weeks, which I also like.
Richie Steamboat def. Leo Kruger [Quarterfinal Match]
I liked their zippier first match better, not that either one is anything particularly special. This one was mostly Kruger controlling with boring offense until Steamboat got a fluke Sling Blade off for the win. Meh. **¼
Big E Langston def. Adam Mercer
Langston got to show a bit more personality than most do in their debut squashes, but also I’m over these things given how many there have been in the first few post-reboot weeks. A squash isn’t impressive when half the roster gets to do them. *
Raquel Diaz def. Audrey Marie
This was very bad, and the crowd has now recognized Diaz as a hack. Clearly, Raquel is not to Eddie and Charlotte is to Ric. ¼*
Jason Jordan & Mike Dalton def. Camacho & Hunico
Regal’s story about Hunico & Camacho’s friendship is now back to being about Camacho biting off a guy’s nose, not his eyeball. I have to hand it to everyone involved, I did not see that finish coming. The rest of the match was standard squashy stuff until the surprise. **
Seth Rollins def. Drew McIntyre [Quarterfinal Match]
It was cute that the finish here built on the finish of their match last week, but it wasn’t that creative in doing so, and most of the match was slower paced and more one-sided than their previous encounter. Good, but I’m hoping Rollins is able to start really showing is stuff soon. ***
