NXT 55

March 8, 2011 – Houston, Texas

The new season (which would go on for something like 67 episodes, more than all previous seasons combined) features rookies from past seasons coming back to compete with each other. They are Darren Young who pro Chavo Guerrero, Conor O’Brian with pro Vladimir Kozlov, Lucky Cannon with pro Tyson Kidd, Bryon Saxton with pro Yoshi Tatsu, Jacob Novak with pro JTG, and Titus O’Neil with pro Hornswoggle. Oh my god this is going to be bad. On the bright side, Josh Matthews has been replaced by William Regal. The big prize of this season is a spot in season 6 (which never happened, though the de facto “winner” (by the virtue of being the only rookie left when the show was rebooted) did feature heavily on the rebooted show in mid-2012). Someone hoped that would keep people interested in this show? There’s no more immunity points, but now there are redemption points, which is like having immunity except your points only matter if you’re tied for last in an elimination pole. That’s needlessly complicated and I bet it never comes into play anyway, just like immunity never did.

Darren Young def. Jacob Novak
This wasn’t awful, and Novak’s big nose got busted open. I’m surprised I didn’t hate this, though Young did get a lot of experience on the main roster last year so he’d better be a little improved. **

Saxton cock blocks Tatsu who was going after Maryse. I guess this is what I have to look forward to here.

O’Brian is dropping the rat gimmick and is now a sensitive guy who lived a tough life and cries over the memories of it. How did rat + sensitive guy = Ascension? Anyway, they hype a preview the Chaperone starring Triple H but then don’t deliver. They can’t even deliver on their bad promises.

Next up is a boot camp challenge. It’s an obstacle course. Cannon creeps on Maryse rather than do the challenge. If he drops the lech gimmick but keeps calling out the challenges for being stupid I’ll root for him. Young wins the thing.

Titus O’Neil def. Lucky Cannon
This was pretty terrible all around. Cannon is trash and O’Neil is a bore. ½*
