WWE ECW 04

July 4, 2006 – Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

Paul Heyman starts the show backstage by addressing the fans. He laments Rob Van Dam’s WWE Championship loss to Edge last night on Raw. RVD is still the ECW Champion, and Heyman wants him to take the night off tonight because his schedule has been brutal. Big Show barges in and demands a title match. Heyman wants Show to support RVD. Show doesn’t care and he wants the match tonight.

Kelly Kelly wants to strip off an American flag for her dance routine. She reveals some paint over her boobs but Mike Knox comes out to take her to the back again. How many times can we do this?

The very snarky crowd chants gives Knox a bunch of indy-rific chants. That’s the most interesting this about this three-minute squash. N/A

RVD is pissed that Show tried to bully Heyman into getting a title match. He wants the match so he can show the big guy that it’s not about being the biggest in ECW. Heyman doesn’t want to make the match, but RVD is dead set on it and he’s going to tell Show to his face. A little bit later he does that by smacking Show in the face, and then he tells Heyman that it’s important for the brand that he beat Show. Heyman is on board and he makes it extreme rules. I smell a double-cross.

Macho Libre jumps the barricade and grabs a microphone, only now he’s a priest. He’s disgusted at what he’s watching, and he thinks the fans are gross too. Then he says he’s not a priest, he just pretends to be one so he can vent his feelings. So whatever, Sandman comes out and beats him up. I get into the probable logic behind this particular weird segment but who cares, it’s not like it’s going anywhere.

Test def. Al Snow
Remember when these guys wrestled each other in a tag match at WrestleMania six years before this? New Breed Unleashed indeed. This lasts one minute. N/A

They show a hype video for Sabu. Outside of him, RVD, and Sandman, there’s really no ECW original that’s over in any kind of significant way. Between that and the undercard being garbage, and that Vampire being outside the arena all the time, this brand is in serious trouble four episodes in. CM Punk must think so too, because he’s straight edge and he cuts his first promo for the company after the vampire thing.

Big Show def. Rob Van Dam {ECW Championship Extreme Rules Match}
Getting arrested for possession sucks, but the crowd chants for marijuana anyway even though it’s the reason their boy is losing his title because he can’t keep his habit under control. Now, did we need more than fifteen minutes of Show just brawling? Probably not. They picked up some steam for the finish, which indeed saw Heyman turn on RVD, but there was a lot of boring stuff leading up to it. They really should have utilized the stipulation more, and someone must have thought the same because next week that’s exactly what Show did. **¾

The fans go silent and then throw garbage into the ring. This was a hell of a choice.
