Lucha Underground: The Prince and the Monster

October 5, 2016 – Los Angeles, California

Ivelisse def. Mariposa
Remember when Mariposa was supposed to be this massive threat? That never happened. This was pretty boring, mostly punches and kicks. Ivelisse won with the Code Red at 6:16. Marty Martinez beats her up after the match. Nobody makes the save. **

Dario Cueto tells someone on the phone that he isn’t sweating Prince Puma getting a title shot thanks to Dario’s Dial of Doom. He doesn’t care about Puma’s bloodline. Johnny Mundo barges in and is mad that Puma has a title shot instead of him. Cueto doesn’t see it. Mundo asks for a Gift of the Gods title match then. Cueto remembers that it was Jack Evans who pinned Star in the previous week’s match, so he’ll get the title shot. Mundo storms off. Then, we see a trippy video telling us to follow the white rabbit. They will soon be here.

Cage def. Texano
Cage goes up two to nothing in the best of five series here. This was the same exact kind of match as their first, the only difference being Cage won this one with the Lucha Destroyer (F5) at 6:25. **¾

Ivelisse’s new boyfriend Jeremiah meets her in the locker room. She gives him crap for being late. He freaks out that she got attacked after the match. He wants to back her up, but she wants to keep her personal life separate. I did not need any more Sami Callihan in my life.

Matanza Cueto def. Prince Puma {Lucha Underground Championship Match}
What a weird match to run with no build at all. There were a couple inherent problems here. One is that Matanza had been rather significantly devalued in his season three title defenses thus far. That meant that Puma’s major feats of strength were less impressive and less dramatic. That said, the match was good and built up what drama it could as it went. Puma countering the Wrath of the Gods was dope, as that was pretty much the only thing that nobody had done against Matanza before. The finish was a bit of a blow, as Mil Muertes runs in and spears Puma, but Dario won’t let the referee throw the match out. Muertes hit Puma with the Flatliner and then Matanza hits the Wrath of the Gods at 12:45. It’s weird that Matanza is just fodder for the more important Puma vs. Muertes feud at this point. This also brings up the point that Puma shouldn’t have listened to Vampiro and antagonized Muertes, as if he didn’t he’d probably be the champion again now. I wonder if they’ll address that. ***¼

Joey Ryan approaches Killshot while he’s working out. He gives Killshot an envelope but says he doesn’t know the guy who asked him to give it to him. Inside is a burned out letter that says, “You left me for dead.”
