Lucha Underground: The Moth and the Butterfly

October 3, 2018 – Los Angeles, California

Aerostar and Melissa Santos meet on the roof. Aerostar explains that Catrina’s dark spirit infected Fenix, making him evil. Santos wants to save him, but Aerostar says he’s gone. He’s a time traveler, so he’s seen how this ends. If that’s true, why did he bring Fenix back at all?

The White Rabbit, Paul London & El Bunny def. XO Lishus, Ivelisse & Joey Ryan
London and Rabbit did a lot with their facial expressions here, getting over who is in charge and how casually he controls his team. London is so good, even here in the apparent twilight of his career. Rabbit tore through Ryan and put him out with a white-gloved Mandible Claw for the win at 5:21. When he pulls the glove out of Ryan’s mouth, it’s covered in blood. The match wasn’t exciting at all, but it was the right match to get over the new Rabbit Tribe. **

Son of Havoc def. Killshot
I’m surprised they didn’t outright save this for Ultima Lucha. Every time Havoc started gaining control, Killshot would grab at his mask and take over. In the end all the high flying gave way to rolling around on the mat, and Havoc won with a roll up at 6:35. Killshot attacked him immediately after the closing bell. He wrapped his dog tags around his fist and pummeled Havoc. Then he took off Havoc’s match as revenge for Havoc doing the same the last time they were in the Temple together. Antonio Cueto came out and reminds everyone that Killshot at Havoc both wear their masks because they’re men on the run. So they’ll have a mask vs. mask match at Ultima Lucha. **½

Marty Martinez and his new friend Reklusa come out. Martinez says that Reklusa was the one behind all the spider pranks on Sexy Star and that she beat up Star outside of her home. But Martinez was even more humiliated by Pentagon Dark, so he took his title. He calls out Mariposa, giving her a title shot because she helped him get focused when he hit rock bottom.

Marty Martinez def. Mariposa {Lucha Underground Championship No Disqualification Match}
Intergender matches in which the woman bleeds are really unsettling. I didn’t get much out of the parts in which Mariposa beat up her brother either because she’s been a heel her whole run. Martinez beats her with Dark’s package piledriver while using Dark’s taunt at 9:10. Meh. After the match, Martinez says that at Ultimo Cuatro, the title match will be a Cero Miedo Match. Then, he breaks Mariposa’s arm. Dark runs out and accepts. **¼
