Lucha Underground: The Battle of the Bulls

December 21, 2016 – Los Angeles, California

The Mack def. Cage, Jeremiah Crane, and PJ Black {Number One Contender Elimination Match}
I’m not sure how they kept the Lucha Underground Championship off of Cage after his performance here. He tore through this match, powering through or countering all offense and using bodies as weapons against other bodies. Texano interfered and hit Cage with the bull rope, and then all three guys hit signature moves on him to eliminate him at 6:02. I’m not mad at them injecting a little life into the Cage vs. Texano story. Crane hits head drop madness on Mack and Black for a while, but gets caught with an avalanche Stunner from Mack at 10:42. Black has now fully recovered in mere minutes from a Tiger Driver ‘91 (I hate the name Lucha Underground has for Crane’s use of the move). Or maybe he wasn’t fully recovered, because seconds later Mack hits him with a stunner out of nowhere for the win at 11:49. I didn’t love how quickly the finish came, but it did make the Stunner look like a world ender that could happen at any time, so that’s good for Mack. ***½

Aerostar & Fenix look for Drago in the bathroom, because that’s where he always hangs out. How has nobody on this show made a joke about this yet? Kobra Moon shows up and says that Drago has returned to the reptiles. Aerostar doesn’t believe her, but there’s no time for that because Pindar & Vibora show up for a fight. The three-on-two attack goes as you’d expect. Pretty cool little action scene there. In the locker room, Sexy Star congratulates Mack on his win. Mack encourages her to win tonight and become the first ever two-time champion. Then they joke about the match they’ll inevitably have over the title. Another (very fake) spider crawls across the locker room. In Dario Cueto’s office, Crane asks for a match. He takes a wooden plaque out of Cueto’s ceiling, which he says he left there as a kid. Cueto looks dumbfounded. Crane walks out and bumps into Catrina. He tells her that the match he asked for will be against Mil Muertes. After he wins, he can have her to himself.

Johnny Mundo def. Sexy Star {Lucha Underground Championship Steel Cage Match}
Worldwide Underground is banned from ringside. This was a pretty good cage match. Star did a lot of scrambling up the cage to get distance from Mundo, which I liked. If she was going to escape she wanted to know he couldn’t catch her. That gave Mundo a lot of trouble. As with most escape rule cage matches, Star screwed herself here. She could have escaped, but chose to dive onto Mundo and when it didn’t give her the win she lost control of the match. David Arquette was seen watching from the crowd, but wasn’t acknowledged by the commentators. Mundo unmasked Star and then escaped at 12:09 when Star scrambled to get it back on. What a jerk, and what a great finish. After the match, the Mack hit Mundo with a stunner at the top of the stairs. Star gives him an approving nod from the top of the cage. This was all very well done. ***¾

Drago is a prisoner in Moon’s lair. She has sent Pindar to get him food, but he’d rather starve. She knows he’ll need to feed eventually.
