Lucha Underground: Seven to Survive

October 24, 2020 – Los Angeles, California

Jake Strong def. Aerostar, Big Bad Steve, Dante Fox, Hernandez, King Cuerno, and PJ Black {Gift of the Gods Championship Elimination Match}
There have been next to no backstage vignettes in weeks, replaced by spending episodes shoving Strong down our throats. Fox eliminated Hernandez at 2:28 with a backslide, thanks in no small part to everyone else conveniently disappearing with no explanation. After some lame “comedy,” Strong eliminated Black with an anklelock at 7:48 and then broke his ankle. Cuerno and Steve go at it in one of the most boring extended exchanges ever in this company. Things get silly as Drago brings out a forklift so that Aerostar has a platform (higher than the balcony) from which to dive onto Steve and Cuerno (who were helpfully just standing around waiting for it). That’s enough to eliminate Steve at 13:53. After a commercial break, Strong uses the anklelock to eliminate Aerostar at 18:02. Cuerno saves Aerostar from a broken ankle and walks him to the back before returning to the ring. The final three felt like they were in the ring forever, kicking out of moves nonsensically just to extend the match. Fox eliminated Cuerno with the Foxcatcher at 30:00. So it’s the same final two as the battle royal, which I guess makes sense and almost creates the illusion tha Fox could win. Strong beat him with the anklelock in 33:42.

They made a deal out of Fox trying to get to the ropes, but why would rope breaks matter in a no-disqualification match? What would be Strong’s incentive to break? The crowd totally turns on Strong after the match, calling it bullshit. That’s bad heat, folks. Strong breaks Fox’s ankle after the match. This match was garbage compared to Six to Survive. It had clunky, unfunny comedy and it stretched on so long without having enough action to account for the match-time. The crowd was dead for basically everything except Aerostar’s dive. Turns out a three-minute battle royal was a more appropriate amount of time to give to these guys.

Johnny Mundo does some gymnastics on the roof. He’s approached by Aerostar, who says that nothing he can do will prepare him for Cueto. Mundo is confident, but Aerostar sys not to face the monster alone. Mundo doesn’t want Arostar’s help, but Aeorstar wasn’t talking about himself, he was talking about the gauntlet. Mundo freed Drago, so Aerostar and Drago thank him by giving it to him. Mundo puts it on and gets the power of a god. Johnny GodKing is exactly the kind of thing that’s been missing from this season. Drago is a little worried they may have made a mistake.
