Johnny Mundo dr. The Mack {Lucha Underground Championship All Night Long Match}
After a four-month break, we finally get to see the big title match between Mack and Mundo. Whoever wins the most falls during the broadcast wins the match, and there are no disqualifications. The first fall was awesome. It came at 4:20 after Mundo dodged and weaved to avoid Mack’s strikes around the turnbuckle, tripped Mack to the mat, and hit the End of the World. Mack came back and controlled for a while, but Mundo caught him with a rope-assisted roll up to go up 2-0 at 7:45. Once again, Mack recovered quickly and took control of the match. This time, Mundo wasn’t able to weasel his way out of Mack’s wave of momentum and went down to a massive powerbomb at 10:51. Mundo feigned an injury to get back on even ground. Here they started really beating the piss out of each other. Mack hit an avalanche Samoan Drop but couldn’t go for a pin because he was tired. Mundo hit a wild dive to the floor but appeared to injure his ankle. With trainers and referees in the ring, Mundo pops up, hits a low blow, and DDT on the stretcher to go up 3-1 at 18:33. Pros and cons to that strategy, as it gave Mundo a point and ran out the clock, but it also gave Mack a chance to catch his breath.
Mundo took a sled ride down the steps on the stretcher and then got flipped onto his face while in it. Whoopsie. Mack follows that up with a stunner for his second fall at 22:44. Mundo appears to make a run for it and the Mack gives chase. But it was PJ Black dressed as Mundo who ran, and the real Mundo beats on Mack with a kendo stick. Son of Havoc doesn’t like that, and he takes out Mundo and Black with canes of his own. Havoc bangs on Dario Cueto’s office door and asks for beer. Cueto tries to give him water but Havoc insists because beer is like a free life for the Steve Austin-imitating Mack. Mundo & Black get the upper hand again. Mundo forces the band to play a victory song for him, but one of the band members is Sexy Star in disguise! She hits a big dive onto Mundo and Black. Havoc & Star drag Black to the back. Mack hits a piledriver from the apron through a table to tie things up at 30:50. With five minutes remaining, a ladder got added to the mix. The commentators scream at Mack as he climbs it for the amount of time it’s taking. Ricky Mandel runs out dressed as Mundo to slow Mack down, but Havoc and Star take him out. Mack hits a Frog Splash through the table, but he’s too slow to cover and the match ends in a draw at 37:14. Cueto comes out and says they’ll break the tie next week.
I love these All Night Long matches. Granted, they don’t have to go as long as a real Iron Man Match, but these matches never feature any stalling or resting. They go balls to the wall for the full time. Yeah there were a few overbooking tricks but they were a blast to watch. The overarching story in this one was great too, as Mack had many opportunities to put Mundo down, but couldn’t always capitalize on his big moves because he was tired. Mack truly screwed himself by going for the dive and not just hitting a stunner, something he showed he realized because he tagged Mundo with one right after Cueto’s announcement. ****¼
