Lucha Underground: Sudden Death

June 7, 2017 – Los Angeles, California

Rey Mysterio checks up on Prince Puma, who does not seem to be doing well. Mysterio tells him to stay away from Vampiro. Puma says that Mysterio and Konnan were no better. Vampiro Chrome appears and tells Mysterio to stay away from Puma.

Johnny Mundo def. The Mack {Lucha Underground Championship Falls Count Anywhere Match}
This is the sudden death decision for last week’s draw. Dario Cueto added the stipulation to this match to tip the scales in Mack’s favor after last week’s match favored Mundo. Mack lost two FCA matches in the past, so it doesn’t really make sense but Vampiro tries to address that on commentary. And to be fair, Mundo had lost his first All Night Long match, so all things are at least equal. This was a fun brawl, interrupted again by Ricky Mandel dressed as Mundo. Sexy Star neutralized Mandel. But PJ Black attacks Mack too. Mack stuns Black on the apron and Black falls through a table. That was fun, as was the very believable nearfall for Mack after it. Taya also interferes and Mundo hits a sunset bomb from the apron to the floor onto a pile of chairs at 9:47. This was just wild. I liked the escalating interference, but Taya’s felt a little unnecessary. ***¾

Cueto comes out to the ring to brag about how awesome he’s made Lucha Underground. He announces a new concept called the Cueto Cup, a trophy that will be awarded to the winner of a 32-man single elimination tournament. The winner gets a title shot at Ultima Lucha Tres. That’s the second time they’ve superseded the Gift of the Gods Championship in favor of something new. Something new is cool, but is the GotG title even a thing anymore? He also says that Mundo will defend his title on the night of the tournament finals. He says he thought about giving Matanza a rematch for the title, but he’s mad at him for looking weak two weeks earlier. Instead he’s giving the title shot to the man who made Matanza look weak, Rey Mysterio. I love Dario Cueto so hard.

Vibora, Pindar & Kobra Moon def. Aerostar, Fenix & Drago {Lucha Underground Championship Match}
Welp, this was the first straight up boring match in a while on this show. It felt like they were just killing time until the heel turn. After a few minutes, Drago sprayed Mist in Aerostar’s face. Moon had Drago take her place on the apron, and Drago hit Aerostar with an elevated diving splash at 5:34. So the whole thing also just doesn’t make sense and I mostly hate it. ½*

In the locker room, Mundo tells a nervous Mandel that they need to be celebrating all night long. Taya walks in to break the news to Mundo that he’ll be defending against Mysterio. Mundo ditches the celebration idea because he needs to start training now. There’s not even time to put on pants! Johnny Champion rules.

Prince Puma def. Mil Muertes {Boyle Heights Street Fight}
Puma’s got street clothes on, so this started out from a good place. I could have done without the walk-and-brawl portion of this, which didn’t entertain much. But once Puma pivoted off of Cueto’s office wall this picked up. We also got a funny bit when the brawl spilled into the office and caught Cueto by surprise. After a bunch of garbage got incorporated into the match, Puma was poised to win with the 630 splash, but Catrina hit him with the magic rock. Vampiro handed Puma a brick, which Puma smashed over Muertes’s head for the win at 11:40. ***½
