I watched the Takeover specials before I watched the TV show. So I’m going to add notes to my original reviews now that I have the full context. I’ll put them in red.
October 7, 2015 – Winter Park, Florida
It’s a bummer that NXT 300 was just a preview for this show. Remember NXT 200 being a big deal? That was fun.
Finn Balor & Samoa Joe def. Scott Dawson & Dash Wilder {Semifinal Match}
It’s hard to see Takeover back at Full Sail University after the awesome visual of having the show in a real arena. This isn’t a fresh take I’m sure, but the Revival is a reference to them doing the Brainbusters gimmick, right? I’m here for it. Ah, yeah, the commentators compare them to Arn & Tully, and other Anderson tag teams. These guys are amazing, exploiting tag team tropes beautifully, and this really should have been the finals with an additional 5-10 minutes. As it is, it was pretty damn fun, and left us questioning if Balor is going to be a team player or a glory hog. ***½ Had I watched the weekly show when I first saw this Takeover, it would have been clear to me that Dash & Dawson (who weren’t called the Revival yet) were still kind of jobbers, and that none of their tournament matches before this one were even really televised. It’s also a little strange that Balor pulled the glory hog move here, because the subtle angle leading up to it was Joe quietly eyeballing the title belt in promos during the tournament.
Rhyno & Baron Corbin def. Jason Jordan & Chad Gable {Semifinal Match}
This is my first time seeing Jordan and Gable, and it’s another example of a team I’m shocked couldn’t keep their momentum going in the long term. This match was so much fun, the first time I’ve found Corbin tolerable, and the first time in a while that Rhyno has looked really strong. ***½ Jordan & Gable were far from as good as they’d get here. Also, this tournament really was Corbin’s career highlight to this point.
Asuka def. Dana Brooke
I’ve watched one match from a random RAW I turned on that featured Asuka and she was great. Dana Brooke is terrible, so I’m curious to see which force will overwhelm here. Luckily, it’s hard to screw things up too badly when you’re getting squashed. ** Thank god they knew to just let Asuka steamroll Brooke.
Apollo Crews def. Tyler Breeze
This wasn’t the most proficient performance I’ve seen from either guy, but they sucked me in and when Breeze got that near fall near the end I popped pretty big for Crews’ kick-out. That counts for a lot. *** It’s hard to get too emotionally invested in a feud that had no real reason for being, but good for them for making something fun out of it.
Finn Balor & Samoa Joe def. Rhyno & Baron Corbin {Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic Tournament Finals}
Corbin just doesn’t have the goods and Rhyno isn’t up to the task of carrying his weight in a main event. This was really slow until the final couple of minutes, and the finish was void of the drama that the end of the opening match promised. Frankly, I’m kind of disappointed in how this match was booked. Having the whole Rhodes family out there to present the trophy was a nice touch, though. **¾ I don’t really have anything to add, except that I think they should have started the tournament earlier so more of the matches could have been shown in full.
Bayley def. Sasha Banks {NXT Women’s Championship Ironman Match}
Maybe I’m looking a gift horse in the mouth, and maybe Bayley and Banks didn’t want to go an hour, but there’s something impotent feeling about making a huge deal about an Ironman match being the first ever female main event but only making it a half hour. It also started a trend of WWE Ironman matches being only 30-minutes, which is kind of lame. It was clever of the production team to take the timer off of the screen when the ladies didn’t make contact for over a minute after the bell rang. Okay, all that said, this wasn’t tracking to be as good as their match on the previous show but the finish built on the first match and was one of the stronger ones I’ve seen in any match in a really long time. I’m super impressed with these two. ****½ It was a hell of a feat, and until very recently nothing in the women’s division has come close to topping it.
